View Full Version : Gears of War Reminiscing

This thread is for the now pretty dead Gears of War.
It had its connection problems, but the multi-player was so hardcore I kind of miss it. Halo 3 is fun and all, but you don't get the satisfaction of blowing someone up with the boomshot or shooting them in the head with the shotgun.
I haven't played a game since that has had so many memorable moments. Cole fighting all the locust by himself and your squad thinking it must be the whole of bravo squad, Baird and Cole in the sewers under mansion, the mad dash from the end of that level to the wrecker, the fight against those giant things that come out of the emulsion, the list goes on.
And those are just from the single player game, there was so many great memories from the mutliplayer. Everything about this game was elite, if you didn't know how to play at a highly competitive level you would get absolutely slaughtered.
I wish more people still played it rather then Halo, but eh what you gonna do, its the Xbox.

i never liked it that much
the sluggish controls were really irritating

I've actually only just got this (on the PC) and my general impression has been that it's really pretty poor, especially with Crysis and the Orange Box out there now. The campaign struck me as being dull and infuriating in equal measure, hardly anyone plays the multiplayer and I've had literally no opportunity to co op yet through lack of any other people. Bit of a disappointment really.

I think it's dead for me now because, while it did what it did very well, that thing it did didn't have a lot of variety to it. Not that I'm knocking it because for a few months after it came out it was incredible and I never stopped playing it.
I suppose my favourite memories of the game would be good multiplayer games on a map like the mansion with everybody popping in and out of cover and the balance of the game sitting on a knife edge, and the whole thing feeling so much more satisfying and cinematic than mutiplayer games normally do. When everybody in a game knew what they were doing it could be such an amazing experience, it's just a shame most games degenerated into people charging into each other and having silly shotgun duels.

I thought it was great. But then I do tend to play FPS from hiding behind a wall. Nothing pisses you off more than getting chainsawed, and its bloddy fantastic when its 4v1 and you chainsaw the lot of them. Talking to people is a lot more crisp and user friendly as well. None of the bullshit pushing of the D-pad and I have found chat to be almost non-existant in Team Fortress, but I haven't played that much and not sure I understand the controls.

I got this for PC and played part of the way through the campaign to get a feel for it before going online. As Splush said, it's massively fun when people are hiding beind barriers and shooting back and forth but then you get the asshole who charges you with a shotgun, everyone breaks cover and just becomes a "run around without using tactics" fest.
Of course the new gametype (which is basically the equivalent of Call of Duty's "Search & Destroy" gametype) mixed that up a bit, but the respawns killed it there too cause more often than not I get stuck in a game with a bunch of idiots running around with boomshots not even attempting to capture the points and killing eachother for fun...oh and the maps are almost always running Annex (I think that's the name of it anyway).

I fucking loathed this pile of tripe (okay its not as bad as I'm saying there, but its still pretty ass).
COD4 is way better. As is stabbing yourself in the testicles for three days with a rusty spork.

That's not really needed. You seem to get a bit too 'passionate' about things sometimes Jay, it makes you look a bit silly.
Anyway I thought it was a fun multiplayer game, I had a great time playing it with my friends offline, especially when we had 8 people playing. The way the violence is so over the top makes each kill a bit more exciting, most of the time in shooters characters just flop over, it looks a bit funny in a way. I had quite a few enjoyable matches with people on live, although problems like glitching and team balancing made things less fun.
The campaign mode (since it's not really single-player anymore) wasn't really that fun on your own unless you played it in small chunks, but with two people playing it was significantly more enjoyable. It's a pity it was only two player though, hopefully this will be fixed in future games.
GOW wasn't perfect but it is a great start to a franchise (a sequel is almost guaranteed and I'm sure I heard something about a trilogy) there are quite a few improvements to be made (such as more multiplayer modes, faster glitch fixes, no vehicles sections, better storyline and better matchmaking) but GOW2 should be something to look forward to.

I liked it a lot but I recently traded it in to afford COD4. Still I don't think anything (in games) has been as fun as when I first got it and played with White Tiger, Thomp, eidderf etc for hours on end.

It was definitely fun, I really enjoyed the games we had, even though I really got pissed off when things didn't go my way :p
I loved the games where there was either 1 vs 1, and the tension running through you as you tried desperately to find the last opposing member before they found you, or the 4 vs 1, where you were on your own and somehow managed to win the game for your team mates.

The 1vs1's i hated watching them i hated being in them because of all the pressure and tension, i just wanted to win and there was always a chance at failing.

It was great being in the 1v1 if you succeeded because you knew your 3 teammates were watching you, and if you do a fancy move everybody reacts to it. I remember being in a 1v1 against ash (i.e. the webmaster of this site who never posts now) and he killed me with a blindfire sniper headshot from about 20 metres. Not that that takes any skill as such, I'm sure he still felt pretty awesome knowing that everyone had seen it.

I sort of miss it, but I don't miss it, it was awesome and all, it's always good for co-op on campaign, but I just never feel like going back on it.
Als, I hated having to whatch the 1v1s, especially on Gridlock, it always ended with some guy trying to snipe another sniper, and it would last for ages until someone landed a lucky headshot after downing them for ages or the timer hitting 0.
The multi was also a bit pissy due to "OMG U FUCKIN NOOB U STOL MA FUCKING KILL AM GONNA FUCKIN GUT YOU YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE SHIT EATER NOOB!!!!" whenever you "Stole" a kill, it was funny sometimes but it seemed everyone did that...

I never played multiplayer but the single player was the computer game equivalent of Die Hard 4.
IE totally ridiculous and over the top, but hella awesome all the same.

Not if you played with the forum people, I was always stealing Whitetiger's kills, it was funny.

I played with the "Forum people" occassionally, but I was usualy with a few other mates, but matches with random people either ended up with the people in my previous post, or some people who are actualy nice about it. I remember loads of matches where I stole kills, and the same guy just said "You owe me a kill" in a realy relaxed way, I payed that guy back.

You didn't play the forum people, you were to late, thomp went to a silver account and it started to drift away since then. Seriously, you missed the awesome games we had.

I think the forum people definitely had a big part in making gears so awesome, for a while you could go online any night of the week and have enough people for a game, and generally everybody knew what they were doing.
