Ok so with the summer holidays in mind I recently bought a Gamecube, controllers and Super Smash Bros. off my mate who was moving house for $60. Bargain? I think so.

The point is up until now I have been using Dr. Mario mostly because I find him hilarious, but to be honest I am completely shithouse with him. In the interests of not inviting mates over only to be comprehensively beaten by them, which character would you say is the best?

Whilst my favourite to use is Pikachu as I'm best with him, the best character is without a doubt Fox. He's the quickest, he can cause serious damage with his gun if you use it enough, he has decent recovery, a fantastic shield move and his smash attacks are very powerful.
Obviously, Falco is 2nd best.

Dr. Mario is also one of my favourites to use for the record, don't feel like you need to change, he's not a bad character by any means.

I guess it depends on your play style. If you like tough characters, go with Donkey Kong or Bowser. If you like fast characters, go with Fox.

My personal favourites are Marth/ Roy, and Bowser. Both can pack a massive punch in a single attack, the Fire Emblem guys also have a bit of speed, and Bowser's dash isn't actually as amazingly slow as it seems.

I liked (havnt played in ages) samus the best, then probably star fox - hes rly fast.

I think Falco is the best personally. I also like using Roy and Mr Game And Watch. The worst character? Ganondorf, in my opinion.

fox is my favourite because he's fast, has quick combo attacks that are hard to get out of, has the reflector which is really useful and a good come back on stage move.
edit: and his gun is really good for getting up peoples percent when they're being a dick and hiding on the over end of the stage.

I like jigglypuff cos her down and B move is an instant KO if pulled of correctly.

and I like yoshi cos my brother always plays as ice climbers and its the only way I can defeat him, I have to use the down and B attack

Fox or Captain Falcon. Fox is much faster, but Captain Falcon is pretty speedy and his attacks hurt more. i am partial to zelda/sheik though. sniping with magic and then running and beating the hell out of them very fast. quite effective.

i still love melee, its a great game.

1. Luigi without question. His floating fireballs have proved very useful to me in the past.

It's pretty damn accurate if you ask me. I personally am a beast with Yoshi, Pikachu and Dr. Mario which sort of proves play style is more important but this sort of shows which characters are best. I.e. if you were to pit level 9 computer players against eachother for example.

That said, certain characters are weaker against others and so on.

My heart will always be with Link. I will say though that if I'm in the mood to play cheap...I'd play with Kirby. It's just too easy.

Link without a doubt for me. That tier list is rubbish. Dr Mario is usually my secondary character after that.

FUN TIP: For really unpredictable and genuine test-of-skill matches, everyone should use random characters. Thats what me and my friends do, and since we have started we can never tell who will win each match.

I use Samus mainly, I just seem to be good at timing her charge shot and blasting anyone off the screen.

Captain Falcon is my second favorite to use for the sheer joy of landing Falcon Punches. Fun note, I've grown accustomed to using Cap's pink outfit for lols. Only real men stand to use the sheer might of Captain Flamboyant and the Flamboyant Punch!

Kirby is fun for the sheer fact that you can suck someone up, jump off the ledge, steal their power (which releases them from you) and then float back to safety while they futilely attempt to recover before falling off screen.

If you are the absolute Jesus of Melee, the "tier" list is for you. By the sounds of it you aren't, and play for fun, which is far better. In which case, you choose the character you like the most and practice. This way, outside of batshit insane competitive tournaments, you will find that any character you use often and get to know will be powerful.

As you can see, Nintendo did a good job of making the roster of characters very varied but even. We all have different favorites.

Recently, I've been getting pretty good as Zelda and Shiek but I mainly use Zelda ... and Sheik. :D

I find the tier list from Melee intriguing, especially as Kirby was the #1 choice for N64 Smash Brothers pros. He has fallen far.

I always play as Game n Watch. I usually dominate all computer/stupid people. If I'm playing serious friends, I switch off to Bowser of Capt. Falcon. I usually have no idea what it is I'm doing, but I sometimes make a decent match for my friends.

Yeah, the basstard is right, Kirby was definitely the best in N64 (For me, anyway) but he looses a lot of his strength in melee.

I'm really hoping they make him good again in brawl.

Chances are the characters will all play very differently in Brawl as well. I expect Kirby to be given alot of his oomph back seeing as Sakurai seems to be putting alot more emphasis on the Kirby games this time around.
