imovie file formats

ok, so i'm doing my media project. i have video that is originally in mpeg format. i've messed around converting it into different things with varying results. imovie has a spack at me if the file's not in .mov format and even then there is no sound. what are my other choices in file formats?

edit: actually, it seems the sound disapperas every time i convert with DiVA rather than just change the file name. i can't see any sound settings there...

iMovie should be able to open any mpeg stuff unless you've used some funny compression on it. I've never had any problems with just dragging and dropping stuff in. May have to download some codecs to make more stuff work in QuickTime?
