It appears that while not yet in effect, they want to make it illegal to just copy a Cd to your computer. I must admit, this is really taking it too far to suggest that.
Not just because its extremely stupid, but it'd kill the sale of all Cds. Honestly, how many people listen to the Cds? You usually rip it to your pc, listen to it there, or on your mp3 player. Did the person suggesting that think of what consequences it'd cause at all?

It'll never pass, I'm a CD DJ or a CDJ and i just burn music from the computer, thats not illegal, in the uk, you are aloud to make as many copies of a cd as you want but you only aloud to pass ONE cd to a friend, which that friend stops there and does not continue the chain...
it's an odd law because when i get cds from other producers, does this mean that i'm not allowed to use their material? itt'l bugger the whole music system up!

Just my thoughts, its true though. I never felt that lending the Cd to a friend to copy was classed as stealing. You paid for it, you bought the object. So they are basically telling us we are paying for the case, the disc and the booklet, but we're just borrowing the songs.

Why don't they just go the whole hog and make it illegal to have more than one person listening to a CD? Cause if they wanted to listen, they should all have bought their own CDs, right?

Stupid RIAA.

oh yeah, I seen this a lil bit ago! Incredibly dumb law.

Do they realise to convert a cd to mp3 you gotta rip it to your pc or w/e? In that case then why aren't they chasing Creative, Apple and Sony who provide the players and software?! I think we know why... Only as good as the tools we're given says I , gar!

It's just bullshit basically

Reports of the RIAA suing over CD ripping prove to be unfounded (http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/12350.cfm)

I think that's pretty much entirely wrong - even if it were legal to copy CDs (which it's not (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6095612.stm)), I reckon this section (http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1988/ukpga_19880048_en_3#pt1-ch3-pb8-l1g56) of the act would mean that you wouldn't be allowed to keep the original after you gave the copy to your friend. IANAL

oh well, all the copyrighted materiel i've copied is my own lol!

The basics of the law state that you buy the cd, and you own the titles contained for your own use. You can make as many copies as you want as long as they are for your own use. The same goes for software. If you hand a copy to someone else, you are committing an act of piracy in the eyes of the law. Maybe there is a loophole for DJ's so they can use copies of mixes etc.

no loophole. we usually give DJs permission to use our tracks. But their are even more problems to attend to, we DJs (or premiss) have to apply for PPL (public Performace Licence) which allows us to use material that we couldn't get copyright for ie Big record labels like BMI/SONY and VIRGIN

I know you need a PPL. I was trying to address the "Let 1 friend have it but they can't copy it for anyone else" item you posted.

When you buy a cd, or any one song (including downloading from ITunes and the like) for that matter, you are paying for the right to use the music. In other words, even though you bought it you don't own it. You're buying a license to use which does NOT give you permission to copy the music in any way shape or form.

I hate to break it to you guys but it has been this way for a long time. It's just something that most people don't know about. I agree with everyone that this is wrong and hopefully we start getting people who are opposed to this in a position to do something about it.

My father works for Sony and he received a company-wide letter telling employees that if they were found to have music on their business computers that couldn't be proven as the original downloaded copy then they'd be fired on the spot because Sony doesn't want to risk lawsuits from that stupid law.

Someone must have shares in a CD player company or just sold their shares in Apple. Stupid law, won't pass. Ever.
