View Full Version : Beijing Olympics behind iron curtain
BEIJING (AFP-Friday, January 18) - - Britain's Gordon Brown arrived in China Friday for his maiden visit as prime minister, with tackling climate change and boosting two-way trade and investment top of the agenda...
In the July/August issue of Amnesty Magazine it reviews the promises made six years ago on Human Rights when Beijing was 'awarded' the 2008 Games. It lists 10 serious violations across the country which they say are "fuelling instability and discontent".
China's one-party regime executes more people each year than the rest of the world put together; two thirds of the 68 crimes punishable by death are non-violent crimes. Re-education through Labour' camps have been used to hold critics of the dictatorship for up to four years without charge or trial. RTL is also being used, the report says, to "clean up" Beijing in time for the Olympics. 'Evidence' in courts can be the result of torture and verdicts given after political interference. Many prisoners, subjected to torture, die in custody.
The IOC rejected the objections and said, "A Beijing Games would leave a unique legacy to China and to sports". Equated with the award of the Olympics to Japan in 1964 and South Korea in 1988, the event is seen as an economic 'coming-out party'. But Amnesty International says that far from improving, as the Chinese economy has opened up to the world, repression in China is getting worse.

I never understood why they gave the games to China when it was first announced, and I don't understand it now. There was talk of brutally sweeping the streets of beggars to make the city 'look nicer' in time for the games, and it seems that nothing has changed.
Boycott anyone?
EDIT: Spambot or no, still serious business.

say what. the exact same thing happend in syd in 2000. homeless peeps were shifted off to govvie housing for 2 weeks, and then thrown back out afterwards. it happens every olympics, everywhere.
i am no fan of china. but i think a lot of this is part of america's plan to de-throne the new world leader. so fuck them. i say good on you china. you might be an enormous shithole, but you're not alone in that.
there is a big superiority complex that goes on between the east and west, the rich and poor, and let's be honest, at the end of the day, the english speaking and the non-english speaking. like australia slamming japan for whaling. yes whaling is illegal butchery and good on the australian governemnt for coming out in opposition to it. well done peter garrett, arguably the most useful thing you've ever done. but that video that came out exposing how AUSTRALIA is actually not the most animal-friendly country either, all the native culling that goes on here and so on, and the "outrage" from the australian public that followed? Get fucked man. japan is not perfect but neither are you.
i'm not buying into all this hypocrisy holier than thou bullshit. i hope beijing's games are as good as they can be, which is arguably not really very good at all considering all the pollution and so on. Like a lot of the equestrians are boycotting for that reason alone. and it's in typhoon season apparently. grand. but still i hope it goes okay. i will not be "boycotting" the olympics at all. until my own backyard is decent i'm not going to be lauding it over anyone else's.

I think the olympics is a heap of crap. All these "events" that are "awarded out" (read: paid the most money) cost the government shitloads of cash in spiffing up a part of the town that all the rich people will promenade around in during the festivities, tossing the homeless out (as sparta said).
And also: the sports in the olympics are BORING! so it's also a waste of money.
and also also: the iron curtain is a weapon in Red Alert, anyone who knows anything knows that. sheesh.

Firstly, this is not a debate and never has been.
In order to debate ideally there should be two sides, and at least a viewpoint from the original poster, not just some drivel they've copied and pasted around the internet to try (failing hard, might i add) and stir-up some kind of ruckus against China (see their profile).
Secondly, no-one else is really treating this as a debate so can we have the thread locked please.

Okay then, for the sake of argument:
how dare you capitalist pigs insult the glorious People's Republic of China!?
Oh, it's okay when every other country does these things, but as soon as it's a communist country, it's suddenly evil!
just you wait... soon, the revolution will come, and every comrade will rejoice over the filthy capitalists as they kick your ass in longjumping and... uhm, swimming. And tae kwon do.
