Ok... so... my mumski made a petition that got approval to be presented to 10 Downing Street and it's all about changing the laws that the Social Workers go by and reforming Social Services itself. The current laws aren't really doing much in the scheme of things because loads of kids that could be saved are still dying at the hands of abusers.
I know this isn't a debate as such but it IS business that's probably a bit too serious to be posted in gen pap. Also, this isn't one of those crappy FWD: petitions, it's le real thing. So yeah... go forth and sign please! It would be much appreciated by me and my mumski. :)

On a sidenote, what do the NSPCC actually do?

according to their website :
Our purpose is to end cruelty to children. FULL STOP.
They seem to want to do this by "Changing the Law", "Changing Public Attitudes", "Supporting children and families" and by "Raising funds".
How they actually plan on doing this isn't immediately obvious but is probably mentioned somewhere amongst all the guff on there. I would post a link but apparently I can't. googling it is easy enough if you actually care.

Perhaps it's just me, but that petition seems a little . . . vague?
What do you actually want done? I mean, I can't disagree with the initiative - saving kids is awesome - but how would you propose that is done?

childline, nspcc, connexions etc etc all suck dick
i had a friend who went to all of them because she was suffering mental and sometimes physical abuse from her parents
they did sweet f.a about it other than offer her counselling to help to deal with it
oh wow good job there putting a "full stop" to abuse, instead of helping people you just basically tell them to get on with it
this is probably pretty biased or whatever but yeah, my opinion of child protection shit in the uk isn't very high at all

but what laws should be changed? the Children Act 1989 sets out to protect children and offeres very clear laws and guidence on protecting children and the definition of a child in need. Maybe it is not a change in the law but the way people enforce the law or interpret it?

While I think it's a great thing you're proposing, I wouldn't expect too much of that site. I saw a petition on there to change the national anthem to Gold by Spandau Ballet.

My friend is training to be a social worker, and he says basically its a bit of a postcode lottery in terms of social services.
He is doing a placement in an area near Portsmouth, and he says that because the social services are stretched to their limit in that area, they can only deal with the most serious cases and there is a lot of very serious stuff that they literally don't have the resources for. If the cases were a few miles away in any direction they would get sorted but they don't.
And its not because the government isn't paying for social care its because not enough people get involved. Authorities up and down the country are crying out for more social workers, and if you read most employment sections in a paper you will see lots of vacancies in that area...

I would sign that!
On Topic: this is a serious issue, but as has already been said somewhere, the NSPCC and connexions etc don't do a great deal. I also think there is very little that can be done but that shouldn't stop the efforts of social sevices and the above organisations. my two cents... more like a dime.
