This fourum isnt limited to just video gaming (it dont say that anyway).
Do any of you people here collect Warhammer? If so, which type?
Me? I collect The Lord Of The Rings (The Free Peoples) and I used to get 40K (Space Marines).
Post pictures of your models as well, if you like.
The pic of the Balrog below isnt mine its just from the official website...I like it...

Space marines are genetically enhanced warriors from the 41st millenium, they appear in Warhammer 40K, and in my opinion are vastly overated.

They do seem to be the most common choice of 40K but I wouldnt say there overrated...

Yeah most of the time its a rip off, if I wanted to pay five quid for a bit of metal I'd get a Thomas The Tank Engine figuire...but its still fun anyway. I'm not bad at the actual gaming, but my painting techinques need to be improved...

At the moment Iam collecting up my army of undead vampires, using the Lamien family.
I used to collect Orks for 40k, and for a while I had a 2000 point army which was quite good.

Blonde, but not dutch.
i posted this to rec.games.miniatures.warhammer the other day, and as this thread has suddenly popped up again ill post it here :D could someone please answer it? :E

Hello.
I'm thinking about recollecting warhammer again, and i've noticed that they all appear to be the plastic figures 'this time around', and im wondering, has this lowered the price any? Is warhammer cheaper to buy now than it used to be, say 5 years ago? :)
Thankyou for your time :)

Also, as a side question : whats going on? lots of stuff has changed, the imperial guards hae suddenly changed quite a bit and the wood elves (one of my favouites) don't seem to have a codex anymore! :O
Weeman
08-10-2003, 04:56 PM
FOR GOD'S SAKE THEY'RE ONLY CODEX IN 40K DAMMIT!
The reason the wood elves don't have an ARMY BOOK is because they are rereleasing Warhammer fantasy with new rules, therefore new ARMY BOOKS. They haven't got to wood elves yet. So be patient.

I used to have a fairly sizable space ork army, but sold it all a while back, was just too expensive.
bought like, 50 painted models off my cousin for a fiver :D
Id play it again ifit wasnt horribly expensive, though it has come down in recent years.
i've got a 1000pt space marine army (Blood angels), and a 2500pt Tyranid army. i cant paint for pie :mmmpie: (mmmm) , so my blood angels all look weird, and my tyranids have got nothing more than a black undercoat.

it's been ages since I've even seen anyone play it, but whatever :)
I never had an actual army cause I always thought it was too expensive and I already had to pay for all my expensive magic cards.. I always used to watch people play and after a while I knew the rules so I used to borrow peoples armies and kick other peoples asses :) was quite fun :) fell in love with dark elves after one guy kicked everyone's ass with them :) hurrah for boltthrowers :D

I used to play 2nd Edition 40K. I'm not keen on the new rules system.
Plus most of my regular gaming group started playing pen & paper RPG stuff.
In short, I've not played 40K in a long time.

aaahh, the nostalgia.
many (and i mean many) moons ago, i had a chaos (fantasy) army. i still have all the models, beautifully painted (except for the ones which have been hideously scratched), but i haven't done anything with them for a good 6 years.
a friend of mine, however, still uses his, and he's 18, so it's not necessarily a pre-pubescent thing. my army's not getting any bigger, though. no money to spare, y'see, after the beer and the cds. maybe if i got a job...

i got roughly 1000 points worth of chaos warriors... i guess ive been back and forth between magic and warhammer for the last 3 years. not finding time and/or money for neither of them i am currently not buying, playing or painting anything at all :(
i do have an old arbhaal the undefeated (think thats his name) wich is decently painted, but since i dont have a camera ull have to take my word for it ^^

i stopped whenever they brought out new rules for fantasy. i had a 3000 point lizardmen army, was very good at using it, couldent use any other army at all!
tried 40,000 blood angels but i got bored with space marines, started collecting nids instead, but like most of the above, found it too expensive and stopped before my nid swarm could get to any respectable size.

Some of my friends started collecting warhammer and they are having a battle after Xmas sometime. I think i'd enjoy it with all the tactics and stuff but its horribly expensive and i dont have the money, although i might help them paint and Daniel said he'd lend me a third of his evil space marine wotsits so i could fight with him so mebbe if i enjoy it i might collect.

Crikey, takes me back to a simpler time, when bad hair cuts and beatings from bullies will be fondly remembered (until I find where he lives, then he'll pay).
But on a lighter note, I had a nice 2000 point Eldar army for 40K and a small but respectable Undead army for warhammer when I stopped (girls and booze shot right up the charts, knocking it off the no1 spot, in fact off the chart). Bought the eldar army in one day from bout 3 different shops (jesus that was fun!)

I have a 3000 point Orc and Goblin Force and some Bloodbowl and a good amount of evil LOTR however I never seem to have time to paint (mainly cos I spend most of my time watching endless repeats of Weebl and Bob yay).
So anyway you really don't want to see pictures.

Indeed! I managed to loose every game i was in... and iv discovered that orcs and goblins are far superiour to poncy druchii, 1 fanatic killed my general my sorceress and 25 cross bow men. This led to mass panic in which the rest of my army pegged it off the field. This wasnt part of SOC tho, although i did just as badly lol.
I like orcs and gobbos again now.

I bought a Warhammer 40k box set after playing at a school club, but then we moved house and I've never got to use any of my stuff :(
I know they've made Warhammer 40K games for the PC, and I've been tempted to buy them, but I'd like a turn-based strategy game so that it's similar to the board game (an FPS is okay, but only if I know it's actually any good, eg it got a good review in PC Gamer).
Anyone know of any good warhammer 40k games for the PC? I think there were maybe some good original warhammer ones, but I've read about the 40k universe, think it's cool, and it would be good to get a game about it. Then I can get addicted to it and not do any university work in my last year :D

Dawn Of War is superb. It is really well made, and you can paint your armies in it :p
Mexican Pie
04-10-2004, 12:10 PM
Indeed- Dawn of War is extreemly fun. I like it's new type of resource gathering (though it does seem vaguely familiar to the resource system in Total Annihilation), and the unit management and production is also very well. I never tire of seeing an Avatar do Kung Fu moves on a Bloodthirster, only for it's head to be cut clean off from one very well placed stroke.
My Space Marines chapter, the Imperial Dragoons, can't be beat! Concentrated Bolter Fire power from 7 Tactical squads, each housing 2 heavy bolters and 2 missile launchers, Apothecaries, Librarians and the Force Commander cannot be laid to rest while the foul stench of Chaos still lingers on the Emperors holy lands!

I am disgusted with Games Workshop. Allow me to explain:
I cant paint the minitures as I have dyspraxia which causes poor motor skills and prevents the ability to multitask. This prevents me from having as good models as everyone elses which means I get laughed at that Games Workshop; PLUS the fact that I can't multitask makes it impossible learn all the rules. (Which are so stupidly big the fun is completely lost dues to confusion.)
It costs 5p to make a standard sized miniture (50p if its a metal one). Even though they sell these minitures at 3-6 pounds per miniture. BIG FAT RIP OFF!!!
Then they sell a miniture based on its importance to the game not on how much the production of the miniture costs. Except for mabey tanks ect. but at £25.00 or more it's still far to much.
I was thrown out of Games Workshop during a match with somone, because I used counters with pieces of card with pics of marines cut out from the White Dwarf magazine stuck on them. Instead of purchasing over expensive minitures and I don't think thats fair. I know I didn't pay for it but I did join the members club for tournaments which I did pay for.
Now I'm learning new game to play which has just as much depth. Battle Tech!

I feel for you, but you gotta understand- the game is a "what you see is what you get" type of game. You can't just cut out Space Marine pics and paste them on cardboard. Sure, it may be unfair for the prices, but do you really think that is in the spirit and rules of the game? Not to mention that it is a modelling game as well, and many modelling items can seem expensive. People may say that computer games are expensive. They sure are.
Also, when you play games, you expect to fight against armies that are actual models. I'm sad to hear about your conditions, but you can still play regardless. People laugh at your models? Screw them, I say! They cannot judge lest they be judged.
Finally, we know that it's expensive. But we do enjoy the hobby, and will but it regardless of the price. Just be glad you don't have electric toothbrushes as a hobby- 30 dollars for 2-3 small heads?!? Now THAT'S a ripoff!

The thing about computers is that they go down in prices veeeery quickly, and eventually you can get decent value for money if you're not stupid enough to go out right now and buy a Geforce 6800 or something (look at me! I've got 200fps when anything over 50 is going to be playable! And I've just spent all the money I earned in the last week in one go!).
But I do think that warhammer is unnecessarily expensive, Games Workshop must be making a packet out of it. Just taking advantage of people's willingness to pay for it... if it got less popular you can bet the prices would fall pretty quickly.

I have a question for you all. I'm tempted to start collecting Warhammer (possibly 40k, unless convinced otherwise). I'm not that interested in playing, more collecting and painting them, so I have something to do. Anyhow, what would be the cheapest price that I could get for a paint kit and a few figures? You know, just something to start me off.
In other news, one of my mates was into Warhammer for a while. I remeber him talking about a new solider he made. Basic marine, rocket on his back - Suicide Soldier! (The tactics of which involved moving it into a crowd and letting rip :p )

I belive this man is correct. By the way if you look on the internet theres many other non Games Workshop games that are rpg, war game hybrids that are quite fun. And these arn't as "geeky" as they are portrayed in america. So here in the UK you can still have a good time with this hobby, without loosing your dignity. (plus it gets you away from your PC and you can make new freinds)
Heres a list that people can Google for if they want:
BattleTech (the universe that MechWorrier comes from)
Dungons and Dragons (slighty geeky, and a bit difficult)
Talizman (oldie but still a goodie
(okay this one is from Games Workshop) Blood Bowl (this is good fun, but the minitures look dullish)
and I belive theres a cheesy Marvel game.

Paint kit? £15 last time i checked, which was about 4 years ago. then it was 9 paints, brush, and 5 space marines.
