I know that there are alot of LOTR fans out there since the release of the movies. Well i've been a fan since i read The Hobbit when I was 6. And I know that there are alot of confused people out there as the movies left lots of things unexplained. Well, here fans can talk and ask me questions that im 99.9% likley to be able to answer!

A good picture of Arwen Evenstar
There are 2 reasons why I posted this pic. It is relivent to the thread and Liv Tyler
is very good looking.

This isn't a debate, the picture is not exactly relevant to the thread (everyone is either aware that Liv Tyler played Arwen in LOTR or they never bothered with the film anyway) and anyone who has an questions about the movies would benefit more from reading the book or reading other books such as the Hobbit, the Silmarillion or other stories such as the Tales of Tom Bombadil.
But a quick question, what is Shelob and why is there only one huge spider like that?

There is no such book as The Tales of Tom Bombadil only The Journeys of Tom Bombadil and some of the books are quite expensive and are not worth buying if you want to know one particular thing.

Sorry I meant "The adventures of Tom Bombadil (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0044407262/qid=1077633429//ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/002-2408965-3380853?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)" , not the tales. And although the books are expensive if you are interested in specifics of the story then it's a good idea to buy and own the books, or getting it from a public library for free.
Besides which you can get special offers on LOTR books and also on the Hobbit and The Silmarillion due to fallout from the movies.
Now about Shelob...

Why is there only one giant spider in Lord of the Rings? Obviously I am discounting the considerably smaller and less malevolent spiders of Mirkwood as mentioned in the Hobbit. And where did Shelob originate?

Shelob is the daughter of Ungoliant. Ungoliant was a spirit who took on the form of a giant Spider, She and Melkor stole the Silmarils. Shelob probably died of starvation during the year 3019. As Sam had wounded her with Sting and blinded her with the Phial of Galadriel.
And I know you are trying to test my knowledge, dont do it.

I'm impressed, you passed. But really making a topic claiming that you are some kind of fountain of knowledge about one fairly minor thing is kind of asking to be tested.

I have a question...
What the hell was Peter Jackson thinking when he obliterated Tom Bombadil?
He has got to be one of the coolest characters in all literature
About Shelob- 2 things
Did you know that off the top of your head or did you reference the book
and- We never know if Shelob dies, Tolkein leaves her fate unsaid and goes on with the story

I'm a huge LOTR fan. The movies, anyway. I tried to read the books and I have yet to force myself to do so.

Well, as for Tom Bombadil, the reason that was left out is the fact that the movies were 3 hours long already, and as cool as that character was, the whole encounter didn't really move the story along.

Tom Bombadil doesn't shape the story and has no effect on the outcome of the journey - thats why. And I knew that off the top of my head because Im an expert. Tolkien also said that Shelob probably died of starvation because of her injury to her belly and blindness.
