in my humble opinion:
worst ending to a movie ever - 'Identity'
when, in the last 20 mins, it takes the final twist - the twist that is so imporant to the modern movie (as in 'i see dead people' etc etc). this twist being that all the characters you have bonded with and taken an interest in during the entire course of the film are mearly figments of the imagination of a psycho, so what happens to them - whether they live or die - is of no consequence at all!!!
when i saw it in the cinema, the whole audience laughed out loud. since it was a suspense thriller, and pretty good up to that point, i imagine that's not quite the reception the movie makers had in mind.
worst ending to a series ever - 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'
i was loyal to 'Buffy' from the first to the last episode, even when it went all squiffy and rubbish after Buffy left school. the final series and the battle with The One - the biggest baddest guy ever - looked really promising, especially cos the slayer and crew couldn't get it together and kept getting their collective ass spanked. something really special was going to have to happen to let good vanquish evil.
it didn't. a magic spell made every girl in the world a potential slayer. cue schmaltzy ending where the powers of the slayer unite the girls of the world, all colours, all creeds, everywhere. bleergh.
anyone want to challenge these contenders with other examples of worst endings ever? go on - make me really believe you had your hopes dashed by a piss poor ending and join me in my misery.

Worst ending to a film ever?
I would have to say (and here I probably risk being murdered by everyone else) Lord of the Rings:ROTK! Not that it ended badly but more that it missed out some VERY important stuff - let's hope they replace it on the Extended DVD.
Worst ending to a book ever?
I can't remember the name of the book :p What I can tell you is that it was about a cowboy who rides into town, has everyone fall in love with him, takes the townsfolk to a rich man who lends them cash to pay off a bad guy. The ending goes something like...
"And so, his work concluded, the masked man mounted his horse. Taking one last look around his eyes fell upon Juanita.
'Please masked man, please tell us your name.' she asked pleadingly
'Maam,' he replied 'they call me the lone-arranger' "
Pure wankliciousness

Worst film ending
Alien Resurrection.
After some hours of mediocre gun play, mutant human alien hybrid "plots", lots of running away and one good scene underwater I was wondering how this film could possibly get worse. suddenly (stupidly) ripley gets captured...
I can barely bring myself to think about what follows...
The Alien Queen gives birth to a lame-arse drippy sniffly monster baby. With a face sorta like a human skull. Woah.
There is a kerfuffle, running and more kerfuffle.
The baby calls ripley mummy and gets pureed as its sucked through a ickle hole into space.
Sometime later I stopped laughing to find that the film had ended.
Worst TV series ending
Pop Idol 2003
Imagine giving that poor girl hope of a career. We are a cruel cruel nation of bastards.

I fully support that position.

That was a great disappointment.
My least favorite ending to a movie is Ghost World. Even though the 'taking the random bus to whereever' was an artsy ending i still thought it sucked.

Alien Ressurection needs a huge battle.
I liked when the marines went into the escape pod, the alien crawled in and you heard them scream.
Fucking scary shit! See the blood splatter!?!?

they avoid infection by being isloated in the scotland hills place.
but your right. crappy ending. well crappy second half.
28 days later is great! They didn't just overcome infection because they where isolated they overcame it because the infected starved.

Worst Ending:
League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Worst ever film on the whole, but it really did just end with a couple of explosions. Truely dreadful.

Worst Ending:
Signs
The film was really good and atmospheric and even a tad believable right up until the end which ruined the rest of the film by being so over the top, it was ridiculous.
If I recall correctly, the film was about aliens visiting the planet for whatever reason, leaving crop circles and the like. They seemed to keep coming to a certain area where these people lived, and there was a great part of the film where they were trying to break into a person's house. Very atmospheric. But then at the end, it showed one of the aliens in the guy's lounge, then they started beating it up.
I wish I could remember in more detail...

Worst Ending Ever: Independance Day. Despite being several million years older than humanity, a race of aliens who kill for fun and live for war leave one of thier ships at Area 51 for no adequately explained reason, and also have a computer system which is compatible with a laptop and requires no connection of any kind.
Call me a nerd.
Second Worst Ending Ever: The Matrix Reloaded. Some guy who looks like Colonel Sanders, the KFC man, preaches some vaguely god-orientated pap about nothing in particular, using long confusing words which detract from the drama of the X-Box style special effects.

quoted and rated for truth.
why did they feel the need to tag on a stupid ending when they could have ended it with them driving through the gates into the unknown. that would have rawked.
i swear, i could have written a better ending with both hands tied behind my back.

In a rather controversial fashion, my worst film ending ever:
2001: A space oddyssey
I was gonna write what happened, but the process bored me, neeedless to say, just as in the rest of the movie, there are elongated periods of time where bugger all happens. The audience is lefted sitting there saying, "now Just wtf was all that about?"
WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THAT MOVIE?

The guy comes in, and you just see him with a look that says "I just pooped myself." and then you see a mirror on the wall where the guy can see the alien holding his child about to knock the kid out with this knock-out gas that comes out of his wrist. The guy has some sorta flash back about hitting a home run or something, and he grabs a baseball bat from the shelf as he proceeds to beating the living bum grapes out of the alien. I thought it was a great ending actually terr0rbite!

sorry magic_pea you are Incorrect, but very close.
SPOILER
The family come upstairs, asthmatic son is ill. Mel Gibson offers to turn on TV. when he tries to stand it up, he notices in the reflection that an alien is standing holding aforementioned athsmatic son. Alien begins to secrete gas into son. Flashback to last words of Gibsons wife, something about baseball, has been mentioned in movie. tells Joaquin Phoenix (who is a kickass actor) to grab his baseball bat. Phoenix ruins aliens shit, alien stumbles into water, burning alien. audience realises that water hurts aliens (even though a large percentage of our atmosphere is made of it HOLE), proceeds to smash ample glasses of water (left by daughter) over alien till alien keels over and dies.
Gibsons faith restored by survival of son, becomes preist again
end.
Good film, full of holes though
