Apple unveiled the iPhone 3G (http://www.apple.com/iphone/) yesterday

3G, GPS and all that, but I'm more interested in the fact that it's now loads cheaper (8GB for £99/$199) and will be available on PayG in the UK: http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone/paygo

Oh, temptation :(

I must say, now that it's on PayG and it's only £99 it does seem like a VERY inviting prospect...

Is it £99 on PayG, though?

They've not improved the camera though, that was the thing I was hoping for :nana:

edit -

Is it £99 on PayG, though?

No, it won't be.

One, $199 is the US on-contract price.

Two, the 8 gigabyte iPod touch sells for £199 and the iPhone will sell for more than that.

I was fiddling with the iPhone a few weeks ago and the camera seems quite good considering all the other stuff in it.

The price is a maximum of $199 all around the world
He didn't say that was only on contract so I assume it's the same on PayG

i'm not convinced, i already have an iPod and a phone (which i rarely use, which was my argument for not getting an iPhone in the first place) so as impressed as i am by the price drop and GPS, i don't think i'll be buying one

The Touch sells for more than the iPhone in the US.

I have an iPhone, and I'll be upgrading (then again, I work for Apple, so why wouldn't I :p). It really is awesome, and will only get better with the app store coming out with the launch of the 3G iPhone.

Edit: Also, I don't think the pay-as-you-go will be that successful. The major appeal of the iPhone is the unlimited data plan it comes with - you can browse the web and pick up email anywhere for no extra cost. That can't exist on a pay as you go deal, although I suppose there could be an unlimited data bundle or something to add to it.

i think I might just have to get one.

i really can't see it being £99 on payg, but if it is i'm scoring myself an iphone

i assume these new 3G ones will still have wifi?

edit: they do

I'm slightly tempted to upgrade my current iPhone, although I don't really want to spend £160 on another 16gig one when I've only had my current one for a few months. The 3G internet would be nice as the 2G is painfully slow at times (although all my regular pubs all now have free wifi)

GPS would be rather nice too, as long as there is some good software for it (TomTom are going to be releasing some, hopefully that will be reasonably priced)

Oh, and £99 for PAYG? Not a chance

I know this is probably a moot point considering it is a phone first and does other things later, but if it had more than 16gig I would have one already. To combine a phone and iPod in one is an awesome idea but my music library is way too large....

Still, they ams sexy. And I do want a new phone. Mostly for the google earth, emails, weather etc. Ability to be an iPod isnt a massive priority if I really think about it....

Lewiji - unlimited data plan means I can surf the webs for free? How does that work?

Lewiji - unlimited data plan means I can surf the webs for free? How does that work?On the contracts you get unlimited web use. That's part of the deal. Provided you don't overuse it anyway, but that's at O2's discretion, I guess.

I'm liking the sound of the £35 price plan and £99 phone...but I should really wait until I actually need a new phone/iPod I guess.

True, however my music library is about 30gb (recently cleaned it out, too) and yet my 16gb iPhone is only half full. I only put the best stuff on there, plus a smart playlist which gives me 50 tracks that I haven't listened to yet - this is nice because when you plug in the iPhone it updates play counts from the device, meaning the tracks I've since listened to on the iPhone get replaced by new, unlistened tracks when I sync.

And yep as Soapie said the contract basically includes unlimited usage of the cellular network for web/mail access. You sacrifice texts for this though as you only get 500 texts across all the plans. You also get a free subscription to a service called The Cloud, which is a load of WiFi hotspots in pubs + maccy d's and shopping centres that normally cost about 7 quid a month to use. Although I think they're mainly in major cities, as I've only found 1 so far :p

It is now a product I would consider to be very useful to me, but I've just signed on to a new contract with O2. Is there any way of changing my contract? They've handed me a new phone, but this contract would be £10 more a month, and I'm sure they'd be more than happy to take more money off me. Thoughts/advice?

Define 'just'.

I believe you've got a 2 week "cooling off" period to return the phone and decide you don't want the contract.

You do in the UK, at least.

Its definatley not £99 on prepay, the price hasnt be set yet if you look at the Carphone Warehouse or O2 websites.

The handset is going to be free on O2 £45 or £55, but £99 on O2 £35.

If you're an existing IPhone customer, you can upgrade to the new one by just signing up to another 18 month contract with the same deal as new customers. (Which is good as you dont have to pay out of your existing one)

If you have signed up to O2 before today but you didnt take the IPhone, there will be an upgrade offer to the IPhone but details of which havent been confirmed yet.

This is a common misconception. You dont have a 14 day return on most monthly contracts if you bought it in a shop. If you did it online, you do have a 7 day return under the distance selling act. Luckily, unlike Tmobile or 3, O2 do have a 14 day returns policy. Thats if you signed up to O2 limited anyway, if it was a different service provider under O2 I couldnt say for definate. Where did you get it from?

The O2 shop in Southampton, less than two weeks I think.

Should be OK. As long as you have everything you can return it. Thing is there will be an option for you to get the new IPhone, it just hasnt been decided how this is going to work yet. The last time, this was only decided 2 weeks before the proper launch so it may be too late by then if you do need to return it. Best advice: Go into the O2 shop and tell them you want to return it cos of poor coverage.

I was going to be honest, at least then they could give me a few options.

I really want a 16 GB iPhone - what would be better if they made it so that you could slot a normal SIM into the handset - I have O2 over a barrel with my contract and I refuse to change it.

I would imagine that after the initial buzz has died down from the 3G iPhone, they'll be more open to negotiation over contract price. Especially 6 months from now, when all the contracts from the original launch will run out.

Hi everyone :)

Just wondering about the iPhone... Is it true that you can't add your own sim to the phone? and if so could I have my current contract transferred to a Paid for PayGo iPhone ?

the reason I need it like that is due to my current tarrif which I don't want to lose.

any info is appreciated :)

iPhones in the UK are tied to O2. You can unlock them yourselves but it will be bricked the next time you update it through iTunes. Thats my understanding of how it works anyway!

You can transfer your number... But not your tarriff. Mainly because of the unlimited data deal the iPhone contracts provide.

Thanks Lewigi!

unfortunately I'll just have to stick with my current contract tariff as it's too good value :) the iPhone will need to wait until next year I suppose.
