Hip-hop is a simplified version of R'n'B, which 'back in the day' stood for Rythme and Beats (incidentally, rock music started out as R'n'B sung by white people).
Hip-hop originated in the ghettos of New York City in the early ’70s. Gangs began “tagging” on the sides of buildings and subway stations to mark their territory. The concept spread, and people in the urban communities turned tagging into an art form referred to as graffiti.
Deejaying and breakdancing evolved soon after graffiti as the movement because more of a culture than just vandalism. 'Back in the Day' hip-hop was DJs spinning music in clubs while people would rap and dance to these new songs that weren’t on the radio. DJs would soak their records to take the labels off because they didn’t want others to know what they were playing.
As High Fidelity recording technology became available (HiFI to you and me) DJs could add samples into thier music, taking songs and mixing them to create new sounds.
These forms of art soon made their way into the mainstream. In 1985, movies began showing break boys, while McDonald’s commercials showed kids breakdancing. Hip-hop was turning into a profitable market. The DJ was no longer useful, because rappers were taking over. The emphasis for rap is on lyrics rather than the music behind it, which is simplified as much as possible to the point of a beat, a bassline and a sample. the skill involved in creating hip-hop was no longer required. Run DMC and Tupac Shakur are the best examples of modern Hip-hop (especially the former), because they actually sing about thier experiences rather than adopt 50-Cent faux gangster poseuring.

Became Rhythme and Beats became Rythme and Beats. In the fifites and sixties, it was Rhythme and Blues. Fats Waller. Pinetop Perkins. Blues. Then Beats. Then it became Rap and Beats. Meanings change.
Chronology of styles:
Rock and Roll was pioneered by Elvis, who sung like a Black dude. Then it got simpler, you had the Beatles. It got more decadent and vulgar, you had the ROlling Stones. It got political, you had MC5. It got anarchist, you got the Sex Pistols. It got heavy, you go Led Zeppelin. It got theatrical, you got Alice Cooper and Kiss. it got simpler, you got the Ramones. It got heavier, you got Metallica. It got more radio-friendly, you got Def Leppard. It got simpler, you got Nirvana. It got a hip-hop base, you got Korn. it got rappier, you got Rage Against The Machine.

If you really wanna get to the roots of it you gotta go back to the beginning of blues way back in the beginning of the 1800's. Those first songs was the proverbial "Adam" of modern music. (if you ignore the classical side). It started to split off around the 1930's with Robert Johnson being the Grandad of Rock and Roll and Billie Holiday the Grandmother of R&B.

tagging wasn't started by gangs it was started by a dude who wrote "tag 183" in subways; 183 being his area code. graf was adopted by gangs to mark territory and has its own specific style mainly being gothic italics or having no style at all
