View Full Version : Cocktail shaker

Ok, I should probably put this in the cheese bin, but I'd kinda like to get some serious answers.

I've recently acquired a cocktail shaker (http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w9/spillaro/home/cockshake.jpg) and want to give it a test drive. Now, rather than doing my usual jackass method of testing an alcoholic device, I wish to learn how to use this piece of equipment properly as it's a pretty fancy thing to have and be able to use. I plan on having a cocktail party next week, so I want to get some decent recipes together to get everyone hammered!

So forum folks, teach me the ways of the cocktail shaker. What are some decent recipes? What ingredients do I need?

IMPORTANT NOTE!

The stonger the better. I don't want anyone to be walking away from this party in a straight line! :D

I'm not arsed writing an underage drinking is bad thing at the end of this, but you know what I mean. Alcohol is for grownups and such like and I doubt the lads behind this forum want to have the website associated with underage drinking yadda yadda yadda.

Anyhoo, I need cocktail recipes!

What, 30 proof and upwards isn't enough for you?

malcolio

Vodka or Malibu with some blitzed fruit and lots of different juices. It might not be that strong, but because it won't taste that alcoholic you'll drink a lot very quickly!

Also, I'm quite partial to a banana daiquiri. :D

Doctor Fruitbat, the proof number is purely the alcohol percentage doubled. So proof 30 is actually just 15% vol, which is the same as a shot of mickey finns, which are like drinking undiluted miwadi.

Still sorcha's and Malcolio's suggestions do sound like they taste good though...

martinis!!!

ice
3 measures gin/vodka
5ml vermouth

stir all this in the cocktail shaker don't shake it as this will only break up the ice and water down the drink.

serve in the cocktail glass with a big green olive or a twist of lemon

ya can't really get much stronger than a cocktail with all alcoholic ingredients :)

ynnekkenny, that's a brilliant idea! Ok, we've got 1 recipe I approve of!

Shakers are awesome and essential bar stuff. It's also easy to do some simple working flair with them. Have the shaker (tin) in your hand facing downwards, then throw some ice up in the air and move your arm in a full circle to catch the ice inside the tin. Really simple and cool. When filling a shaker with ice you want to hit it about half full only so there's room for ingredients and so you can get it shook up well.

Moving onto cocktails: Judging that you want to get *slaughtered* I would always go for a long island iced tea. Thankfully they're also easy to make but require a lot of ingredients.

The jist of it is you mix equal portions vodka, gin, rum, tequila, triple sec (sort of any orangey spirit, stuff like grand marnier/cointreau etc) into your half full shaker. Then you grab a double portion of lime juice. Give this a couple of quick shakes pour into a tall glass (called a highball) and then fill the rest with some coke.

Shout if you want anymore advice I've done a good bit of research/tending! :)

Sweet merciful crap that sounds like it'd not only get people slaughtered, it'd cause a massacre! I like it Jimmeh!

So we've got 2 recipes that I approve, my gf approves of sorcha's choice. So we've got 3 recipes. Are lets even it out with another nice tasting one :D

PS.

Does it matter what kind of ice you use? Does it need to be crushed ice or will regular ice work?

Jimmeh

You want to use regular ice ideally, the issue with crushed ice (or overshaking) is that you get small pieces in your drinks which dilute them and can mess up the taste quite significantly. Crushed ice is nice for filling a highball for the long island or other cocktails like a mojito.

Are the cocktails you're making essential to use a shaker in?

Well I'd like to use the shaker as much as possible, purely for the visual effect of it all. I don't want to just go pour, pour, pour, there's your martini you bastard.

If it's a stunt you want, give a proper separated B52 a shot (oh wow bartending pun).

What you want is a shot glass, some coffee liquer (Kahlua etc), baileys, triple sec and a teaspoon (or you can to it with a barspoon but that's a hardcore way).

Basically the ingredients are done in 3rds. You start off with the kahlua in the bottom of the glass. You then get your teaspoon and have it so the back is facing upwards and slowly pour baileys over the top of it so it sits on top of the kahlua. You then wash the spoon or get a new one and do the same with the triple sec. You then get this awesome 3 layered shooter that tastes incredible but also fits in your criteria of cataclysmic drunk.

french martini, for wooing the ladies

from wiki, which is probably using a different source (but they did not cite!!):
A "French Martini" is a vodka martini that mixes with Chambord and pineapple juice. It includes pouring 2 ounces vodka, 1/4 ounce Chambord liqueur, and 1 ounce pineapple juice into a shaker with ice. Shake and pour into martini glass. Martini can be garnished with a fresh raspberry if applicable.

is it bad to want one now? i mean it's nearly one o'clock and scotland's in europe!

Just put in how many people are coming and it'll give you an awesome list of what you'll need. Used it before and it's pretty accurate, allows you to make a hell of a lot of different things.

There are cocktail recipes all over the internet, just find a decent list somewhere and then make them :)

Long Island Iced Tea (my recipe)

Equal parts of:
tequila, vodka, triple sec (or cointreau), bacardi and gin
add a cap full of fresh lemon juice, and fresh lime juice, add the fruit to the mixture and top with coke
(should be 1/3 mix to 2/3 coke)

You need the coke to sweeten it because of the juices.I make this every boxing day and it's a winnar.

Sweet merciful crap that's a great website! :D

But I'll still need to get a good few recipes together for it.

Here's what I got from it:

1 bottle(s) of vodka
1 bottle(s) of whisky
1 bottle(s) of gin
1 bottle(s) of scotch
1 bottle of sweet vermouth
1 bottle of dry vermouth
2 bottle of rum(1 light/1 dark)

Extra supplies

10 kgs Ice (yes, you'll need that much!)
2 tonic water
2 ginger ale
2 coca-cola
1 soda water
1 orange juice
1 cranberry juice
1 whole limes
1 whole lemons
Olives
Maraschino cherries

Now hit me with all the recipes you can come up with! Even make shit up! I want everyone at it to be hammered! This is just the basic crap that the site suggested that I get, so assume I've got all of this, and mention anything extra that one might need...
