this is totally annoying. When it's plugged in it knows it's plugged in but it won't charge and says it has about 30% battery left.
Is something broken? I'm worried a connection might be broken or something and that would suck.
edit: hmm started working again after a retart so I don't know what was going on there

it might be that the battery logo froze
mine does that occasionally. sometimes the volume controls disappear, and other annoying things, but a restart usually fixes it. if that fails, there's apparently some registry thing you can do, but i don't like messing with the registry very much

I'm kind of assuming this is it. I've only just realised that the logo says it's charging but it also hasn't told me that the battery is charged, it's stuck at 31%

You could try and google it.

Or open your Power Settings and fiddle around with them

I've done both of those things because I'm not a retard.
edit: OK so the battery icon does decrease but not increase so it's starting to seem like something is actually a bit wrong :(

I only got the laptop about 4 months ago so I doubt it

It's possible if you've kept it in sub-optimal conditions.

So it just conked out midway through a session?

It'll be a hardware problem rather than software. Ring up the manufacturer, they'll replace it for you

Ugh how boring.
Hopefully the techie at my dad's office can sort it out. I'm thinking that it could be I've been putting too much stress on the jack and so I'm not making a proper connection? Although that might not make any sense because I can still run on AC power and it's telling me that it is charging even if it clearly isn't.

It sounds like the voltage on the adaptor is wrong. I can't think of how that could of happened if it it just conked out though.
Ignore this i just actually read the original post properly.

I've got a naff old laptop with a battery life of two and a half hours... It runs out of battery life approximately 5 minutes after being disconnected to the mains. I know what the problem is, it has a knackered battery. Unfortunately a new one would cost me about £100 so I leave it plugged in. It's too heavy to lug about anyway and can't do much other than browse the interwebernet. You're probably realising about now that although this post is related there's no real point to it, if not you should by now as I've just told you.
