I've never been a big fan of old Americana, but I'd been drawn to Harvest by forces beyond my control (I'd heard bits of it and thought it was so good I should probably buy it). It's certainly an outstanding album, 'though I feel it's let down by the orchestral parts; over the top, in my opinion.
Anyway, On The Beach was last year released on CD for the first time after being long deleted on vinyl, and with all the excitement and owing to a recent spate of Harvest bingeing, I decided to get it.
And you should too. Seriously. This is a flawless work. The title track alone is worth the price of a new CD.
The album is melancholic, but shot through with a sense of hope and a rebellious edge. The songwriting is excellent and the musicianship is exceptional, with every line sung, every note and chord, kick and snare creating a captivating sound that, for it's age, sounds remarkably fresh.
It's just brilliant.
