Which is a nicer time to visit?

I'm planning to visit coming up soon, leaning towards fall for my boss paying for the flight, spring if it would be sufficiently better.

It's like 90% sure I will be going to England, the 10 percent is me not being allowed a passport for some reason or another. I was hoping int he fall/autumn but I could wait until the spring if it would be nicer, since my boss would pay for my flight.

Looking like fall (the random British lady at my store said fall too because all you student hooligans would be in school.)

I'd personally be more concerned with winding up on a no-fly list than not getting a passport. Similar result in the end, but with more inconvenience in the interim.

Apparently I have a warrant in NB, but just for open liquor, so if I apply as NS it shouldn`t do anything.

I mean.......I should be good, yeah.....

I have no record, that I know of. But there might be a terrorist out there with my name. And if he's a dual citizen, too, I'd have an even harder time convincing anyone it's not me...

During my more fuzzy moments I tend to look a bit like a mad bomber.

it rather depends on where and what you plan to do once you are in dear old blighty.autumn is probably best if you are just going to be relaxing at some holiday resort.if you are planning museum visits in london or such things then it doesn`t really matter.spring tends to be a little more unpredictable than autumn.i can thoroughly recommend southern cornwall fo a sightseeing holiday.it is britain at it`s best.

What is this "fall" thing?

Americans really should stop inventing words for things, we already have good words for seasons.

*shakes fist at cheeky Americans*

As to what time to visit the UK, thats tricky. Our weather has been so altered lately, that i really dont know. Many English folks are walking about confused as to where summer has gone.

Spring's beautiful in Britain, but there is a tendency for severe rain. The weather forecasts for next spring would be useful but you often don't know what's going on until the day. For lying around on a beach, as said above, it's probably better in Autumn because the weather's better and it's hotter. But no one's around.

Have fun on your trip, and don't say 'Fall', 'Elevator' or 'Aloo-min-um' cause you'll get lynched.

*shakes fist at cheeky Americans*Uhoh, you've attracted the attention of SUPERPEDANT.

Fall was used in the England as far back as the 16th Century, and was completely interchangeable with autumn. It may come from the Old English faellen.

In the 17th C we done went and colonised the America. And those settlers took the word fall with them. Over time, our language evolved out the word 'fall' and began to exclusively use autumn - in fact this happened with a lot of words over this period. It is also worth noting that the New England (US) accent is probably significantly closer to the English spoken in the 17th C than the English now spoken in England.

This happens a lot - we are beginning to see a similar phenomenon with some immigrants into the UK. For example, there are some small changes between the language spoken by Indians in the UK (especially 3 / 4 generation immigrants) and the language spoken by Indians still in India. It seems that immigrants seem to cling on to the specifics of the language and culture that they left, whilst those left behind continue to change and evolve.

/edit

And don't worry about saying stuff like fall and elevator - just be sure to wear a big "I AM CANADIAN" badge. We love you guys - you have all the cool stuff we like about america, but with less guncrime, fundamentalism and retarded politics.

tbh just toss a coin and see what it lands on. The weather here in blighty has the habit of being bloody brilliant at some random time of the year whilst we're all wrapped up in jumpers and mittens and when we're finally waiting for sun and have the lotion on it'll be a howling gale or a complete washout.

The good thing about Spring compared to Autumn is that at least there won't be christmas decorations up. But the trees will have no leaves and could look a bit miserable.

Sorry for being of absolutely no help there.

I'd say autumn, it's a nice time of year; although your boss paying for the flight does make spring sound good.
Make sure to visit the nice parts of Britain and leave the bad out, we like to make a good impression :)

Fall looks like it's winning. The other bonus of fall is if I decide I want to quit my job, I can do it sooner.

Also note to self. Stay away from wherever it is Matup lives.

That really narrows down your ability to do touristy things, seeing as we have both a castle and a legoland.

Try the nice parts of UK (really, they exist, honest).
Although the expensive thing is right but then again the rest of Europe seems to be as bad.
But yeah the weather is shit, today where I live we've had (in order):
Light rain, sun, heavy rain, sun, heavy rain, overcast, heavy rain, more rain, overcast.
Weather is just luck in Britain, you can try and beat it but you'll probably fail.

Edit: I forgot to say. Autumn.

Couldn't tell you which season is better to see the UK in, out of Autumn (Autumn damn it!) and Spring The weather in both is pretty bad (although Spring is a bit better I think.) Don't listen to Matt, the UK is a lovely place. You'll enjoy your time over here in Spring or Autumn (Not Fall!). :)

Do you get nice lightning storms? I love lightning storms, so that would also help push towards autumn. Also, I'm planning on spending nights in hostels in various places and am looking to get a rail pass to travel with, a woman here told me theres a pretty good one thats only for visitors.

I don't here. I think it'll be generally similar weather as to here, since I'm on the east coast of Canada, approx. same latitude and it's just the Atlantic in between us.

Winter is the new summer. In fact, winter is the new spring, summer AND autumn! It seems like we just have one long, cold, rainy season now. :p

Having said that, I'd say autumn. Weather is generally warmer, and seeing as I'm on holiday for most of September, you're pretty much guaranteed nice weather in England, while I'm being drowned in rain on holiday! ;)

Autumn/fall here is very pretty (if generally seeming colder than spring). Spring is generally warmer with lots of lambs and flowers and stuff like that. Go for Autumn as long as you don't mind a bit of cold, it's far nicer I find.

My mother and sister are going to be in the UK in just a few weeks. They seemed to both think late July to early August was the most ideal time, though I'm not sure their methodology used to come to that conclusion.

For the last couple of years we've basically been skipping Spring and Autumn or just hanging around the standard damp greyness that can be seen in both August and December.

Unless you'd rather go to Britian rather than Britain.

I think spring is a bad choice for the most part because it always always rains here, don't come here in spring thinking "Oh, the weather will be nice" because it wont, at least with autumn you get what you're expecting for the season.

Man, I really hate england apparently?

For starters, it's pronounced Autumn (Aw-tum).

Secondly, I prefer Autumn to Spring because it's about this time of year that the weather starts to get a bit random all over Britain and Ireland. One minute you'll be rained on like it was monsoon season, the next you'll be complaining that it's too warm, then you'll fall over because out of nowhere a gale will have started up!

Spring tends to be rainy. April showers and all that.

Autumn tends to have the knock on effect of dry days from summer.

Depends what you want to see really... it's useless generalising the weather because here it doesn't care to be generalised and will tell you so with unbelieveably hot springs when there should only be a tepid (and soggy) warmth.

Autumn is also a bit of a lottery, i wouldnt go later than october because then you get close to winter. The pretty colours will be gone and you get the grey chilly skies draining the colour from everything. Early autumn on the other hand can be very lovely and fresh and crisp :D Also it looks beautiful. It might also snow or something. Who knows.

Personally I think summer is best here. All the fields and woods are green (and theres lots of those) and the birds tweet all the way into the twilight :)

Woops, accidentally rambled... oh also! Met a canadian once, the other week in fact! She was quite spectacular :D

WINTER!

It's the best time of year. Britain in summer if icky hotness mixed with sticky horrible screaming children EVERYWHERE and you sweat from the humid clammy heat just from standing up.

Erm. Rant over.

P.s I don't like Summer

the weather is going to be crap no matter what time of year you come over, so just go whenever is convenient. there's plenty of stuff to keep you occupied even if it rains the entire time you're here, but be prepared for the fact that the public transport system is an absolute shambles all over the country.

Right, two things to note....
On the calendar the seasons run as follows:

Spring runs from March - June
Autumn runs from September - November

If you want anything vaguely resembling warm, with the least chance of rain look at June or September. Otherwise, come in the "summer".

We're currently in summer time, and there have been flash floods down south this week, torrential rain most everywhere else and temps of around 15 degrees. (Athough London climactically is a little warmer, and Scotland a little colder).

It's cold and wet, which is why we in Blighty have such a highly developed sense of sarcasm, as we have to sit in all day, hoping one day the sun will shine.

Spring:
Pretty flowers & baby lambs and stuff
Wet weather
Everyone starts waking up and the enconomy and stuff gets going
prayers that we'll have a good summer
Evenings get lighter

Autumn:
Pretty leaves on many trees
Wet Weather
Grumbling that we didn't have a good summer
Depressed after 'holiday mode'
Evenings get darker
