View Full Version : Why do you replay games?

Why do you play through a game more than once?
Quite a few people complain that new FPS game X only lasts for 10 hours whereas classic FPS game Y went on for 40+ hours. Personally I like my FPS's to be about 10 hours so that I can get to the end and then go play something else as I don't have as much time to play as I used to and so a game such as Crysis or Bioshock will take me several weeks to complete and by then there is usually something new that takes my fancy.
At the moment the games that I play tend to be pick up and play games such as Team Fortress 2, Trackmania United Forever and Audiosurf. I did recently complete Crysis and want to get to the end of Bioshock (which I haven't played for a few weeks) but they only games I tend to go back to now and then are the Total War games and Footy Manager.
What games do you replay and why?

I've replayed Wind Waker about ten times, usually without a break between each time. The only really long game I played more than once was Tales of Symphonia, because I missed loads of stuff the first time. Most games don't really need you to go through again- they either have a level select, so I just do the bits I liked, or they have loads of stuff to do after completing it, and starting again is just a limitation, like in Pokémon.

I usually replay games when a sequel to them is coming out.
Before I got GTA 4 I played through San Andreas,
and I'm sure i'll be completing RE4 again when RE5 is about to come out.

I play them again just because I want to reexperience what I loved with them when I first played them.

I play them again when I'm bored, or feel like enjoying the game again. not really sure what else there can be to it. I do agree, I'l play a game when a sequel is coming out, but usually only if it continues the story.
Otherwise it's just a case of "I'm bored, what haven't i played in a while?" For example, played Dead rising today. First time in a year and a half.

I find it pretty difficult to replay anything. I think the only things I have played all the way through more than once are the Prince of Persia games.
I just get bored easily.

I replay Sonic 3 & Knuckles all the time as well as 2 and 1 though not as much.
If games like Smash Bros Melee count, I'm always digging that one out and playing on it, at least I was before Brawl came out.
I've also replayed The Wind Waker quite a few times as I have done with Mario 64, Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion. It tends to be a case of not playing a game I love for a while, then forgetting enough about it for it to be a somewhat new experience again.

I don't really replay games unless it's co-op or to get something secret, even then it's not usually the whole game.
The only game I've really replayed repeatedly is Kirby's Dreamland on the Gameboy, I don't know why.
Shenmue I & II in preperation of the third. Believe.

The game i've replayed the most is Metroid Fusion.
I've probably completed it 6 times or more,
partially because it's so damn short,
but mainly because it's hands down the best GBA game ever.

Most Zeldas have a lots of replay value for me and I'm currently trying to build up the effort to play Bioshock again on hard wtih no vita-chambers and try to find most stuff and save all the little sisters. And anything co-op namely GOW with anyone who needed help on insane or Halo 3 for score/skulls/terminals or doing the last level :)

I replay things that want to be replayed.
Things that have multple paths or plot twists. Things that are so good you want to play them through again. Things that are so cool, you would happily play them twenty times.
It's a cliche but Deus Ex is a game I have played through several times - trying to kill everyone, trying to kill noone, a standard play-through...

I replayed the Kingdom Hearts games after a break because they actually make me feel brilliant. Two huge gaming/t.v factors of my childhood all in one. :D

My most replayed games are probably Super Mario Land 1 and 2, mainly because we only had about 4 games for our Gameboy. :p

Deus Ex is a game that I've replayed many a time
I tried to replay Bioshock, but I got bored
I replayed Resi 4 twice, and I started a third run on professional mode, but I never got very far with that.
Mostly I replay games where there's a reason to. In Deus Ex, you can play the game in basically any way you want. In Bioshock, the same is sort of true but not quite. In Resi 4, you get weapon unlocks and the like for completing the game, so you can try again with the new unlocks.
I also replayed Prey on the harder difficulty level to get some unlock. IN CONCLUSION, THERE ARE MANY REASONS TO REPLAY GAMES.
edit: i replayed metroid: zero mission a bunch of times to see nakeder and nakeder samusses.

I reply RTS games a lot, trying Crusader Kings, Rome: Total War etc, Battle for Middle Earth 1 & 2 and C&C games through a cycle. By the time I get sick of playing one game I'm normally in the right mood to try another older one. Same with the Gamecube, there's regularly an excuse to play old games on it again with new people. I know I've got my monies worth out of all my games this way! :)

I replayed Viewtiful Joe a couple times, to unlock the cool characters and then play with them.
Alestor was awesome.
Actually I think I basically replay any game that I enjoyed enough the first time.
I played through Half Life 2 about 5, 10 times.

cos the game was about an hour long?
im an achievement whore so usually when I replay its to do the stuff I didn't manage last time.
I replayed Viewtiful Joe a couple times, to unlock the cool characters and then play with them.Viewtiful Joe had this nack for making you feel like a fucking pro if you did it right...hitting a bullet back at someone and stringing together a combo is just so awesome. There was supposed to be third one too, shame it doesn't seem to be happening :/
I still boot up my N64 and play Mystical Ninja now and again also, I wish it would come to the Virtual Console...
I've finished Resident Evil 4 and Half-Life 2 countless times...
I play everything again as long as enjoyed really.

Normally if I haven't touched a game in a while, I won't really replay. The exception being music games like Gitaroo Man and Um Jammer Lammy, cos the songs just rock.

When I replay games I set myself a challenge
eg. 'Win pokemon red, only with your starter pokemon', 'Beat Banjo Kazooie, but every time you go into a level you must completely finish it (With all notes) without dying before you can come out'
And my personal favourite,
"Beat HL1 with only a crowbar and rockets"
That was insane hard

I replay games because I'm not often playing enough to have actually completely "finished" more than a few in a couple of decades; and for games with a 'save' feature I tend to prefer starting from the beginning instead of picking up a saved game from weeks/months earlier. Apart from Hotel Dusk not that long ago, I think the last one was honestly Super Mario World.
I should probably quit buying new ones and just focus on what I've got for a while...

I've replayed both the KOTORs about 50-odd times. I like trying to go down every path possible. I also replay GH games just for the musics. Hmm, what else... Pokémon.

Currently playing through Mass Effect for the third time. The first time I just played through the plot, the second time I thought I would do everything. Now I'm playing again because I have just noticed the downloadable content and I have read about stuff that I didn't find in second play through.
And now there have been times where I do or say somthing then I wished I had done it another way, but I wont reload because it means I can do that in my fourth replay.

I've played almost all of my games more than once. At least 3 times in fact. I usually go with changing the difficulty settings each time I play it. If there is only one difficulty, I try to complete the game within a certain time limit e.g. Start playing Prince of Persia Warrior Within at about 12pm and finish it by 6pm. I only replay games when I've nothing else to do....

I think I'm going to play fable again which I completed last week.
Mainly because I was no where near as powerful enough as I wanted to be and I want to try being really evil.

i occasionally try and do marathons...and fail miserably.
I've replayed Banjo kazooie about 4 times now, i'm currently doing it a fifth time, trying to complete every level 100% first time
otherwise, just for fun, either to re-live the experience or to see a certain part again

Oh.
Baldur's gate 2.
I played the fuck out of that.
Probably completed it about 3 times including expansion.
It's a pretty damned long game.

Win pokemon red, only with your starter pokemonThis was how I always used to play pokemon. My blastoise could kill ANYTHING.
Most of the games I 'replay' are ones that I only could get about halfway through when I was younger as they were too hard for me then; Zelda: OOT, Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64 come to mind, as well as most recently Mario Golf.

Red Alert 2 and Carmageddon 2 on the PC, Toca Race Driver and Burnout Revenge on the Ps2.
Red Alert I can't stop skirmishing. Especially once I discovered online mods like Deezire. Having your map completely filled with crates is so much fun! :D
Carmageddon 2 is just my all time favourite game, nothing de-stresses you like charging head on at a pick-up truck at 200mph and watching the explosion.
The PS2 games only when I go home to my parents house where the PS2 is.
I love motorsport so will always want to do some racing myself.
And Burnout from when I think "sod this, I just want to crash into some people on purpose this time!"
