View Full Version : Premiership 2008/9 Competition

(ENTRY NOW CLOSED)

The new season is less than a month away, so as always I thought I'd do a competiton to go with it. This one's simple enough, as all you need to do is predict the season's final table. You may need the teams:

Arsenal, Aston Villa, Blackburn, Bolton, Chelsea, Everton, Fulham, Hull City, Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Stoke City, Sunderland, Tottenham, West Brom, West Ham and Wigan.

Then, all you'll need to do is post them here in an order, preferably numbered 1 to 20.

The scoring is easy: for each team, you get 5 points for the right position, 4 for one away, 3 for two away, 2 for three away and 1 for four away. See, that even adds up to exactly 100. I'll update the league table each weekend (after the Sunday games) along with how the teams are doing, and that's about it. (Oh, and if you could say who think will be top scorer that'd be good, since I'll use that as a tie-breaker)

Maybe you could throw in some other categories in this, like top scorer, first manager to get sacked, biggest transfer flop, young player you expect to make a breakthrough, worst hair, fattest player, first red card, most red cards, oldest goalscorer, youngest goalscorer, number of times Wenger doesn't see it, number of players Harry Redknapp would "yeah we'd love to sign 'im, but...", and other crap.

13-08-2008, 03:19 PM
And me but my stuff like that always seems to be too OTT for people's liking. Tell you what, anybody who enters can pick a top scorer too. If anyone's tied on points, it comes down to how many goals their player's scored so far. And then if it's still tied then I'll sort something else out to separate them with. About time I entered I think.

1. Arsenal I may be rendered retarded by optimism but I can see Arsenal challenging all the way. Yeah Hleb and Flamini are gone, but Hleb being replaced in the starting XI by Walcott will produce a more direct attack (Walcott scored more last season for Arsenal than Hleb did in the past three). The defence is shaky at times but they held their own until Sagna was injured and Kolo moved to right back

2. Man Utd I can't see Ronaldo being as effective as last season but I imagine the focus of the team will shift this season when they inevitably sign a new centre-forward this month.

3. Chelsea Will be stronger than last year (they would surely have won the league if Drogba wasn't injured for most of the season). Not sure how Deco, Ballack and Lampard will fit in the same midfield though. Their best bit of business this summer was keeping hold of Carvalho when he allegedly wanted to leave a couple of months ago.

4. Liverpool Not much different from last season. They'll be better off if they don't sign Barry. Keane'll take the place of Gerrard playing up with Torres and Gerrard will probably play half the games on the right wing.

5 Portsmouth They'll miss Muntari in midfield but they're very solid in defence and Crouch and Defoe will score more goals than any other team's front two.

6. Spurs Darren Bent is actually a very good forward, the main reason he didn't do well last year was because he didn't play. A bit like Keane and Defoe kept getting swapped around before Jol stuck with Keane. The midfield looks a bit weak defensively.

7. Aston Villa Brad Friedel is a great keeper and they've improved an already good defence by buying some actual full backs but I'm not sure if any of their strikers will score more than 9 or 10 this season.

8. Everton Hard to judge really since they will probably strengthen the team before the end of the window. If Arteta and Cahill (he won't) stay fit and Yakubu keeps scoring they'll be alright.

9. Man City And then they'll sack Hughes for only finishing 9th.

10. Newcastle Utd If Owen doesn't break himself that is, otherwise they'll finish 26th. Coloccini is a great defender, and unless he turns to shit like every other defender ever to play for Newcastle (I think the stripey kit has some kind of strobing effect which messes with their heads), they'll do better than last season.

11. Middlesbrough Afonso Alves will score a billion goals, which they must be hoping will cover for the fact that they have no keeper.

12. West Ham Probably the highest concentration of cunts of any squad in the league, they'll be average again. If Bellamy stays fit for the whole season (does anyone else notice how many injury-prone players there are these days?) they may get a place higher.

13. Fulham Some great signings (Schwarzer, Gera) and Roy Hodgson in charge rather than Sanchez (he would have signed me last summer only I was busy) will lead them to the promised land of midtableness. Andy Johnson's transfer will work out as £1,000,000 per league goal.

14. Wigan That Egyptian fella looks a bit good and Kirkland's one of the best in the league. The guys in between aren't so great but they'll be alright as long as no one gets kidnapped.

15. Sunderland Roy Keane seems to sign five shit players for every decent one. Good thing he's signed about fifty players since taking over then.

16. Blackburn Rovers Paul Ince is a ballbag. He can get away with bullying his players in the lower leagues but the Premier League ponces won't stand for it (David Bentley left his last training session halfway through after Ince demanded he do 20 push ups fas a punishment for disrespecting him (by standing with his arms folded when Ince was speaking)). But yeah, so long as Santa Cruz doesn't turn into McCarthy they'll be alright.

17. Stoke City Play absolutely shit football and are apparently trying to buy a 6'8" centreforward. Will get the odd bumming but probably sneak enough 1-0s to stay up.

18. Bolton Sorry Luna. Unless Elmander turns out to be amazing I can see Megson carrying on his career pattern of being shit at every club.

19. West Brom I know they won the Championship but they lost the reason why. They have no forwards and will try playing proper football and get murdered.

20. Hull City Much like West Brom they've lost their best player in the summer (Frazier Campbell) and it'll be a step too far for them. A lot of their squad were in League 2 with them a couple of years back. They'll probably do better than Derby, but not by much.

Oh, and top scorer will be Emmanuel Adebayor. Who will presumably store a billion and one goals.

United have already built on a great team and will finish top by a margin, but Liverpool and Chelsea will form a three-horse race that will go all the way till May. It'll all be decided on the head-to-head games. Arsenal will start strong because of a fortunate fixture list, but will drop off the radar as the season goes on.

United to win the Prem, another top 3 to win the CL, Arsenal to win the league cup.

1. Man Utd - Depends on signing stiker, but I reckon they will pull through. After all the rumours, Ronaldo has mediocre season and Sir Alex forced to rely on Wes Brown for goals, which he delivers.
2. Chelsea - Scolari plays a 1-9-1 to incorporate all Chelsea's midfielders. Ballack still gets upset and breaks Deco's nose in December.
3. Liverpool - Torres to score all of Liverpool's goals, and getting half of the assists (assisting himself) with Gerrard getting the rest. Benitez promoted to club owner by Hicks, who puts himself on the bench for the last game of the season.
4. Arsenal - Leading the league until mid-March, when Wenger sacks the first team for scoring a "not beautiful" goal, and playing the rest of the season with the Arsenal U-6's, who are still better than Stoke.
5. Portsmouth - Defoe and Crouch likened to "Pele and Maradona in the same team"
6. Aston Villa - Martin O'Neill is okay I guess
7. Spurs - QUAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNDE Ramos buys every player with the prefix "the next...". Some good ("The next George Best"), some not so ("The next Nicky Hunt")
8. Everton - Joseph Yobo reveals himself to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Sold to Real Madrid at end of season for twice the previous world record transfer fee
9. Blackburn - Paul Ince is sickened by the way Blackburn perform for the first half of the season, and signs himself in the January window for a club record fee, then proceeds to single handedly drag them from the relegation battle.
10. Man City - Dr Thakshin wins award for "Innovation of the season" by having a different manager for every match, including cups.
11. West Ham - Dull
12. Newcastle - Keegan would LOVE IT, HE WOULD LOVE IT, but in the end Newcastle have another dull season, prompting Keegan to reiterate his point about not having enough money. He is then given all of Mike Ashley's money, and builds a super team for the next season...
13. Wigan - Steve Bruce proves to be rubbish after all but Chris Hutchings returns to save the day
14. Bolton - This is being modest, Elmander does score a billion goals, let down only by Meite, whose presence is still felt within the defence
15. Sunderland - Keane signs rubbish and Sunderland once again fail to capitalise on their 40m investment. Keane still regarded as a "bright, young manager".
16. Fulham - Fulham's plans to make Craven Cottage England's largest stadium distract the players.
17. West Brom - Good, but Meite ruins everything
18. Middlesborough - The sight of a crowd of six at the Riverside in March prompts the players to forfeit their remaining matches and relegate themselves. "Maybe now the 'fans' will show up, even if it is only to show they are angry" screams a tearful Alfonso Alves
19. Hull - Play with lots of heart, but suffer from having players that no-one other than Hull fans have heard of.
20. Stoke - Only get six points, by doing the double over Newcastle.

Top scorer Torres :o - Betters Elmander by one, scoring a billion and one

Well that took a while. Here's:
THIS WEEK'S TABLE!

http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/5369/aug17br1.png (http://imageshack.us)
http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/5369/aug17br1.1b8b1174b8.jpg (http://g.imageshack.us/g.php?h=164&i=aug17br1.png)

So streety takes an early lead by a point and a half, with just a few others close behind. Now, you may be wondering what's going on for a few reasons. I'll try to explain:

- It's text-only cos I don't have Excel. Yes, I'm doing this on Notepad until I get it.
- Goals is to do with the top scorer. People with a goal picked either John Carew from Villa (yo) or Fernando Torres from Liverpool (everyone else).
- Points are more or less scored in the normal way (5 for correct place, 4 for one place out etc. down to 1 point for four places out) BUT the halves are there or a reason. Some teams are tied on everything (e.g. Man U and Newcastle have 1 point, 1 goal scored and conceded) so I've levelled their places off to make it fairer (Man U are shown as 10th and Newcastle 11th because of alphabetical order but I've made them both 10½th since it's in the middle). If you say they'll be 10th and they're 10½th you get 4½ points, if they're 11½ you get 3½ points and so on - but you can't score only ½ for a team)
- Anyone on the same number of points is separated by their goalscorer if possible (in this case no-one can be), and then by the number of teams they scored 5 points with (so Flava Dave is 10th), and then by the number of 4½s (so ynnekkenny is 7th and Disgruntledgoat is 8th), and so on. Any stats about 5s, 4½s and the rest are only shown if needed.
- It'll get easier in a few weeks, honest. It's worse for me :p

Special congratulations this week go to:
- ashburnham for scoring a point from Hull in 6th
- swampmonkey for scoring 3 points from Man City in 18th
- Nuclear Spoon and Dingbat for being so ridiculously hard to split
- 3v1l |\/|1NiOn for reminding me just how hard your name is to type

There must be some sort of formula for it you can devise. I could help, if needs be.

Well actually this was on Notepad since I don't have Excel. Took like two hours...

Once I get Excel though I've got some formula stuff planned to help me. Might take about half an hour to set up but then barely any time to make the table each week. Thanks though :)

- Nuclear Spoon for making the above post and then plummeting
- Flava Dave and ashburnham for being so insanely close despite having such different tables
- And the Villa defence for keeping a clean sheet for the first time since November! (Sold Laursen on Fantasy Premier League after losing to Stoke though :()

No table next week due to England, in case you didn't know.

Can I choose my top scorer still?

If so, I'll go for another latecomer and have Robinho.

By the way, top of the league is for badasses.

THIS WEEK'S TABLE!

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/4236/15thsephk5.png (http://imageshack.us)

I currently feel the need to acknowledge:
- swampmonkey for another two Defoe goals
- Flava Dave, Dingbat and Roxit (even though you two are 19th and 20th) for getting a hat-trick this week courtesy of Adebayor
- Bacon Machine for such inconsistency (oh, and for picking Robinho as top scorer)
- Roxit AGAIN for now having been 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th
- and Heurelho Gomes. No really, well done you!

Back in six days :)

Mr stabby

THIS WEEK'S TABLE!

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/1056/21stsepmn9.png (http://imageshack.us)

This week bullet points are given over to:
- AP for being sooo wrong
- streety for staying in 2nd
- 3v1l |\/|1NiOn for adding another 10.5 to his score again
- Roxit for finally leaving the bottom four
- everyone in general for 18 people improving their score and for somehow all going up or staying put if in the top half and all going down or staying put if in the bottom half (look at the rank changes)
- and Man City for winning 6-0 this week with six different scorers, something only the best teams can do

20. Hull City Much like West Brom they've lost their best player in the summer (Frazier Campbell) and it'll be a step too far for them. A lot of their squad were in League 2 with them a couple of years back. They'll probably do better than Derby, but not by much.

Special mentions:

- swampmonkey for yet another goal from Defoe
- the half a dozen people who picked Torres as top scorer
- The rest of last week's top 4 () for all going down a bit
- ashburnham for being the only player stuck in the bottom half
- and Hull!

Same time next week :)

http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/4884/20thoctpa8.png (http://imageshack.us)

Well done:
- jonffm and ynnekkenny for consistency
- the three people who moved up six places and got eight more points even though not much changed
- People in general for making the tie break stuff very easy this week
- and Amr Zaki, who's not bad at all.

I should be +1 for rank not +0 BTW, might fix later. Woo :)

THIS WEEK'S TABLE!

http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/9551/9thnovfh6.png (http://imageshack.us)

Special mentions:
- everyone for being patient
- Urlosenged and Nuclear Spoon for picking Darren Bent as top scorer (mainly Urlosenged as he was being serious)
- streety for the impressive leap from 11th to 4th despite not much change in the league table
- jonffm for a score of 58, equalling his own record
- and Alvaro Arbeloa for getting me 13 points on Fantasy Premier league this week :D

Hassle me more from now on, seriously. It'll make me do this every week.

THIS WEEK'S TBALE!

http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/5559/16thnovtq0.png (http://imageshack.us)

Since this is all worked out automatically (the only thing I do for our individual scores is put in the team's positions) I'm pretty sure nothing's actually wrong here. So special mentions go to:

- Flava Dave for getting off the bottom in some style
- streety for 2 Ronaldo goals
- Roxit and Flava Dave for being the only people to actually get more points this week than last week
- me and jonffm for such a catastrophic week
- people in general for managing to be so oddly packed together...
- those of you who picked Torres as top scorer for somehow all (nearly) being right next to each other somehow...
- and anybody who plays Fantasy Football and got about a million points this week :p

Bacon Machine
17-11-2008, 12:56 PM
Woo, top 10!

Robinho is my bitch.

A bit of a case of who lost the least points this week...
