This is the place to plug all those films that you love and you think other people should watch. All you need to do is name it and give a good reason to watch it - that way we can avoid having an "Innit fooking smart" thread about every movie that was ever made!

I'll start:

Movie: Lantana

Reason: Excellent plot and acting plus without being contrite all key players interact with one another at some point - brilliant.

Movie: Paperhouse

Reason: One of the finest and most unique fantasy/horror movies ever (Bit more fantasy than horror). Shows that britain can do what Japan has been doing of late. And that we were doing it 16 years ago.

Movie: True Romance

Reason: One of the best movies with possibly the best cast ever (Christian Slater, Patricia Arquete, Denis Hoper, Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Samuel J Jackson, Gary Oldman). Writen by Quentien Tarrentino, in fact his fist full script. Some of the best dialogue in any movie, coupled with a gripping plot, packed full of action. Widely acclaimed by many top critics as the best film ever. Worth watching just for the Hoper/Walken scene.

movie: X-men 2: X-men united (X2)

Reason: I don't much care for comics or science fiction, but this movie blew me away. All the special effects, plus great plot, characters, dialouge, action makes it one awesome movie.

Cheeky Prophet
28-02-2004, 09:26 PM
Movie: The Great Escape

Reason: Its a wonderful movie. Based on a true story, it shows what happens when you put the world's greatest escape artists in one POW camp. Steve McQueen plays the main character. There are some really classic scenes in it you'll never forget. Its dramatic and funny and captivating at the same time. One of those movies you can watch over and over, and want to watch again.

MOVIE Time Bandits

WHY One of the strangest, yet greatest fantasy/comedies of all time. You've got midgets (dwarfs), Sean Connery and John Cleese (as Robin Hood) in a time travelling adventure involving myths and legends and the devil himself! The humour is very much influenced by Monty Python and Director Terry Gilliam is on top form.

Robin Hood (John Cleese) - "The poor are going to be absolutely thrilled. Have you met them at all?"

Randall - "Who?"

Robin Hood - "The poor."

Randall - "The poor?"

Robin Hood - "Oh, you must meet them. I just know you'll like them. Charming people. Of course, they haven't got two pennies to rub together, but then, that's because they're poor."

MOVIE : Monty python and the holy grail

REASON : It's monty python, does it need a reason?? oh ok.
Well i guess because it is comic genious. It was the best of all the python films and has the best quotes.

Twelve Monkeys.

Because it's like a French art film made big-budget Hollywood style without any of the stereotypes you'd associate with Hollywood. It's got a convoluted whodunnit time-travel plot, and Brad Pitt pulls off one of the best performances of his career as a twtichy mental patient with a wandering eye.

It's also got really surreal directing from Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame.

Movie: Dr. Strangelove
Why?: Because it has one of the best cast of actors (Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Slim Pickins...), you will go "oh, so that is where The Simpsons got that from", and great dialog.

film : blues brothers (original not 2000)

why: great music, great acting (well sorta), one of the original self-spoofing films, cameos from james brown, arethra franklin (and many more), hilarious, and one of the most blatent film mistakes in history (the car falling off the bridge bit).

Reasons: The Cops vs Mafia movie. It'll make you laugh, it'll make you cry, it'll make you scared of Sean Connery!
Discover for yourself why dinner time and baseball shouldn't mix!
Be amazed as Kevin Costner appears in a quality movie! (other than Bull Durham and JFK)
IMO everyone should see this film.

*Where's the chicks wheres the chicks wheres the chicks wheres the chicks?*

Film: Kickboxing Academy

Reason: One of the best Karate Kid imiatations I've seen in a long while. A great cast of fat kids with braces, who by the end of the movie, HAVE DEVELOPED AMAZING KICKBOXING SKILLS! It's pure excitement, with action, comedy, and romance. A pure thrill ride that deserves your respect.

Film: City of God

Reason: Possibly the best film I saw last year (well that and Pirates of the Caribbean :D)- refreshingly vibrant, deeply engrossing, incredibly well paced and shot and the cast is made up of real residents of a Brazillian favela who improvised about 70% of it giving it a gritty, witty but never amateur edge. I second that..

Also

Movie: Gia

Reason: A story based on the diary and life of the US's first proper super model 'Gia Marie Carangi', played by Angelina Jolie. Tragic, and moving film, and for the guys 'a lesbian sex scene'.

Movie: Girl, Interrupted

Reason: Another Angelina Jolie movie, also based on true events of Susanna Cayson, played by Winona Ryder. Filmed from the inside of a mental institution in the 60s/70s, where Susanna ends up after taking a bottle of aspirin with a bottle of vodka. Very moving story, with fantastic acting all round.

NO

The first one was amazing and revolutionary in terms of special effects and plot.

The second one passed bareley as okay due to a great preformence by Hugo Weaving as agent Smith (+ the agent smith fight scene and road chase)

The third one was downright awful

Movie All of the The Lord Of The Rings movies

Reanson It has the best CGI character ever created (Gollum) and brilliant battle scenes, a great plot (Tolkien takes credit for) and fantastic actors!

Film: Clockwise (1985)
Reason: John Cleese, one of the funniest men alive, shows what he can do without effing and blinding his head off. At times this film drags, but you've gotta love it because of the way he apparently rather innocently commits shit loads of crimes just to arrive on time. And of course, the car-kicking bit.

Reason: Dirty dancing is such a girly film. i love it. Its just one of those films i loved to watch as a girl (also grease), and of course very strangely i had a thing for Patrick swasey. he was rather nice. I want to do the lift uin that dress. My dad used to do it with me when i was little. Until i got to heavy and hurt his back a lot.

Film: One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

Reason: Jack Nicholson as a criminal who pretends to be insane to move to an asylum rather than a prison. Tries to breathe some life into the patients, but faces stiff opposition from the nurses.

Nicholson is on excellent form, and you've gotta love the big indian chief.

Also anything by the Cohen brothers (The Big Lebowski, Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou?). Great characters, great stories and a great sense of style.

Movie - Jet li's Defender

Anyone who likes kung fu, heres a few classics:

Film: Rumble in the bronx

Reason: Some absolutely classic jackie chan fight scenes, particularly the one in the bar, he's goin in and out of fridges, stuff with bottles, hard to explain but i'll never get tired of watching that scene.

Film: Fist of legend

Reason: Jet li before he got to hollywood famous, no stupid special effects, just great fight scenes. He's fighting the japanese (i think its ww2), and they dress/act like nazis, which is always a bonus. Arguable the best kung fu film ever made

Film: Drunken master

Reason: Its pretty dodgy in places, but if you love thew stupid voiceovers and comedy in old kung fu films, this is a winner. Plus jackie chans drunken fighting style is just so damn cool.

Movie: A Mighty Wind

Reason: From the creators of Spinal Tap (Nuff said). Actually it is a bit more mature than Spinal Tap and probably not as laugh-out-loud funny but it has a load of subtle and hilarious humour in it and Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls/Principal Skinner etc) wearing the most outrageous beard since the_colonel dyed his for Paddy's Day.

Others by the same team and well worth looking out for:

The Langoliers, a Stephen King book-turned-into-film. No one particularly famous in it, just a really neat storyline.

Also: Planes, Trains And Automobiles - p*ss funny Steve Martin and John Candy film (a million times better than Uncle Buck!)

And: The Hand That Rocks the Cradle/Single White Female - two great, creepy films, which I've put together 'cos you can buy them both on one VHS from Morrisons or Woolworth's for only £4.99. So now there's no excuse:p :D

Movie: Bellville Rendevouz

Reason: very well made french animated film, no dialogue, the story is told through song and pictures.

Movie: Barton Fink

Reason: Very odd film by the Cohen Brothers, hard to come by now. One of those films you have to watch 3 or 4 times then can't get it out of your head for months, and you still can't work it out. John Tuturro, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi.

Movie: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Reason: Let me start by saying that if you missed this film yesterday and you haven't seen it beofre that you have to rush out to the video shop and get it NOW or you'll smell and no-one will like you or ever talk to you again.

Anyway, This Movie is great for two reasons.

1. It's without a doubt one of the best films of the past ten year, If not the best. The perfect cast, beautifully thoughtout story lines and an incredible setting make this an incredible movie, but the fight scene's make it an instant classic. Seriously, They're a movie on their own.The guy who choreographed the Matrix did the honours for CTHD and he completely surpassed himself, I've never seen a film so magnificently choreographed. The ending is gorgeous, everything about it is gorgeous. Exquisite. Truly a work of art.

Is Belville Rendevous the same film as the Triplets of Belville? I'm assuming that the latter is the North American name for the former until anyone informs me that this is not the case.

Film: Wings of Desire

Reason: Fantastic film by cult director Wim Wenders. Absolutely wonderful speculation on why Immortality might not be so fantastic, and an affirmation of the beauty of humanity. It tends to top the list of pretentious art-house films that college students talk about while drinking strong coffee and using words like "ergo". If this is your bag, definitely watch, if not, watch anyway.

Film: Naked

Reason: Another pretentious cult film, this time by Mike Leigh. Most of the film is improvised by the actors. Leigh would say "X is your motivation, X has to happen, and try to work X into it" and the actors would go from there. It's absolutely amazing, and if you're into existentialism, it's a must-see.

ooo a definite + for you my friend for mentioning "army of darkness"

the previous two evil dead were mainly funny because of the hammy acting and the obviously fake makeup, whereas the humour in army of darkness really comes into its own.

Go and see:

Shaun of the dead - the "what would happen if resident evil (biohazard) actually happened to my town?" if you liked spaced, this bumps its importance up even more.

Any monty python movie - the term "legends" just doesnt qwuite do them justice, eh bwian?

Signs - my mate who doesnt get scared that easy had to sleep with the light on and had to borrow my water pistol - i nearly wet myself - worth going just to see your mates that scared

...The thing with the water is there's water in the atmosphear, so if the aliens weakness was water they would be long dead before they could get to your mate. And if their weakness was water, wouldn't they go to a planet without water? I havn't seen the movie, so I don't know anything else about it...

Movie - Requiem for a Dream
Why? This has it all. Great acting and directing, a good soundtrack that fits the film, and really cool looking camera effects. What sets this movie apart from others is that it follows 4 main characters, and does it right. At the end of the film, you feel as if you know the characters.
Go see it, now!

movie: Empire Records.
reason: It is one of the funniest movies i have ever seen. i only know a few other people who have seen it. If you love rock and everything about rock, you'll love this movie. Actors: Anthony LaPaglia, Maxwell Caulfield, Debi Mazar, Rory Cochrane, Renee Zellwegger, Liv Tyler (another reason to watch), and Coyote Shivers (my favorite musician) Its about a day in the life of record store clerks, thats it, no real plot line at all.

Movie: Thirteen
Reason: This movie was cowritten by the girl who's life it is about. She plays her friend in the movie. Basically its how a normal 13 year old turns to drugs and sex and stuff like that. The movie really gets you emotionally involved. Fantastic film.

Movie: The Great Dictator
Reason: Charlie Chaplin made this film in 1940 before America entered the war. 'Twas a very daring thing to do, but was supported by Roosevelt. Its basically a spoof on Hitler: "Heil Hinkle!" Charlie even dances with a balloon globe. When some nazi soldiers saw it back in the war they opened fire on the screen. Fantastic film.

This is a really good movie about the relationship between an autistic man played by hoffman and his brother played by cruise.

Film: Withnail and I

Reason: That is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. 2 complete alcholic spanners living in London in the late 60s go for a short holiday in the country. To be honest, I didn't find the holiday bit that funny, but the start and end when they're in their flat in London are just priceless. I would try and explain, but you really have to see it to get it. All should watch.

edit: No, I've never played that drinking game, although I have heard of it. To be honest, I was surpised at how few drinks they actually have. For a real drinking gamne, see the insanity of alchohol thread, should be one or 2 pages from the back.

Garfield

This little Character that we all know of, has now come to the screen, and with a good entrance at that! The film follow's a short story between Garfield And a Dog And a small love story between The Owner Of Garfield and the Vet.

Reason

A sweet little story of freindship and humor always goes well together, and work's well with this film, although it is slightly corney at some point's, i'll give a 8/10 ........+ The Animation is ace!

Hi all
Movie: Donny Darko
Reason: tis sheer class. If you've seen the film once, watch it twice more, you may think you understood it the first time, you didn't :) the film is so far outsid e the box it's in a universe without boxes. Infact where Donnie Darko is, is a place where boxes aren't even a concept. Seriously though, probably one of the best, deepest most broad films i have ever seen

Butterfly Effect
Reason: a completely different spin on an old idea 'what if you could change the past' looks at repercussions of actions in an extremely surreal way. Very cool. Watch it.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Reason: Jim Carrey but a totally different style of film for him, funny, sensitive, an excellent film. This film is rather surreal as well actually, guess i'm just wierd for surreal stuff lol :). But definately one to watch, I'm not really into romanticky stuff but this is a really cool film. worth a look

Reason: Because it's the sort of movie I imagine I would make if I had the talent and the chance to.

It takes place in a future where you can go into another person's mind and interact with them in their dreams. So Jennifer Lopez, here seen before she decided to become known for her arse instead of trying to make it on her talent, plays a therapist that goes into the mind of a schizophrenic killer, to try and save the life of one of his victims.

The killer hates and fears women's sexuality and one might say that so does the the movie itself. Women's sexuality is portrayed in a pretty reactionary way. Jennifer is the movie's heroine while she's maternal and asexual. There's even a scene where she appears like a Madonna (as in the mother of Christ, not as in Madonna the singer.) When she does appear in an overtly, though tasteful, sexual way, she is in the momentary grasp of the villain, and therefore momentarily bad. Maternal = good. Sexual = bad.

I find the ending very moving, when she realizes that in order to save the only part of the killer's mind that is still good, she has to kill it, instead of killing the bad part. When she kills it, that person dies. The way I interpret it the movie is saying that our true character is always the best part about us, not the worst. So although it's sad, it's really hopeful at the same time.

The movie is a great thriller and like a moving CGI painting. It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen, it deserves to become a classic.

Reason: Sooo funny. Jack Black is a legend. Does anyone else think he looks like a pie in human form?

Film: The Negotiator

Reason: Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey are in it, and it's got a plot that keeps you guessing.

Film: Swordfish

Reason: One of the best opening sequences I've ever seen. And John Travolta doing his thing as a bad guy is always good (see also: Broken Arrow).

Film: Romeo and Juliet (the modern one, by Baz Luhrmann)

Reason: Great adaptation of a classic.

And now for one I wouldn't normally like:

Film: Jack and Sarah

Reason: Yes, it's a romantic comedy, but every so often there's one I like. Stars Richard E. Grant as a soon-to-be father, then his wife dies in childbirth (not a spoiler, it's the premise of the film). He has to raise the baby by himself, and he's totally clueless. He gets help from his in-laws and parents, an American nanny (Samantha Mathis), and a tramp (Ian McKellen). It's funny and emotional, go see it.

Edit- Almost forgot:

Film: Timecode

Reason: It's divided into four screens, each of which follows a certain character or two, and was shot in one continuous 90-minute take. No cuts at all. The plot is kinda average, but I like it for the way it was made.

Anywho. I reccommend you all see Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. It's wonderfully cheesy, corny dialect, and it's all in black and white!

It's set in the future from the POV of the twenties; so, it's set in the forties, but there are planes and flying aircraft carriers and robots and inventions and wa'huig. And everything in the movie that isn't an actor or a prop being interacted with by an actor is computer-generated!

Stars Danny Glover, Leigh Whannell and Cary Elwes.

Film - Requiem for a Dream

Reason - It's an 18 and for a good reason. The film is absolutely astounding, and i've never been so affected by one before as I have by this. It's a tragic tale of 4 people and their drug addictions from Coney Island, US. The movie spirals through their lives and trips and ends tragically, which makes your heart bleed. Incredible filming, story and fabulous acting performance by Ellen Burstyn makes this a must see but not for the faint hearted.

P.S Not to mention a fabulous soundtrack, especially the haunting strings of the Kronos Quartet.

Just saw this tonight. Went to see it for 2 reasons:

1. It's got Cole Hauser, I've been a fan of his since Higher Learning.
2. It's not 'Assault on Precinct 13' a film that didn't need to be updated.

Simple plot outline, minimal spoilers, Cole plays upcoming action star 'Bo Laramie' who has just discovered why the paparazzi have a bad name. A minor feud between Cole and the main paparazzi guy, played by Tom Sizemore, escalates with grave consequences.

I really enjoyed this film, don't expect a complicated story, but it flows nicely and Cole really plays his first big lead well.

The Manchurian Candidate

Excellent thriller, although not quite as good as the original. Great acting from Denzel Washington and brilliant work from Meryl Streep. Her performance needs to be seen to be believed. Good plot twists, can be very scary (brainwashing scenes are well done), and one hell of a climax. Wonderful film.

movie: spirited away
reason: if you're like most people, you think animation is for little kids, and grown people who like anime creep you out. when you think "anime" you envision a 300 pound man in a hello kitty shirt or a spotty 15 year old who spends all his time online with a screen name like "XUchihaSasukeX".

this movie will make your re-evaluate your opinion.

it's that simple. everyone i've ever spoken to who watched this movie came away with a new appreciation for animation as a storytelling device. most of my friends were the kind of people who call anime "stupid nerdy kid crap" until they were forced to watch this movie in school, and now they're all raiding my collection. After this watch princess mononoke, maybe catch some cowboy bebop on adult swim, and you'll have a brand new respect for anime.

try it. i dare you.

Spirited Away=AMAZING. I saw it ages ago, and I totally agree with you.

Phantom of the Opera, I havnt seen yet, but will do very soon.

As for the manchurian Candidate, I have seen the new onw, and i thought it was quite good. crappy-ish ending but oh well, what are you gonna do?

Now, enough blabbing, here is my film:

Film: The Neverending Story (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088323/)

Reason: I simply just love this movie! The Neverending Story is an awesome movie for children and those who are still children at heart. An excellent story of adventure, friendship, and above all the courage you must find inside yourself.

Go ahead and make fun of me if you must, I know that for every movie I love someone else will hate it just as strongly. But this will always be to me one of my favorite movies. A few movies from my childhood will always have a special place in my heart like this on, as well as Tron and the Gremlins Films.

It's only been 6 days since the last posts, so I can still post can't I?

Film: Dodgeball.

Reason: A fantasticly goofy plot. Average Joes gym has to raise $50,000 (I think) to save their gym from being bought by rival Globo Gyms. After several failed attempts at fund-raising Average Joes gym enters the Dogeball tournament (forgotten the name.)
The charcters are great and Ben Stiller does a great job throughout the fim. "You think you're so funny with your jokes Mr.....Jokey." And Patches was the other stand out charcter, who gives the best line in the film "You're about as useful as a c**k flavoured lolipop." In one word: Hysterical!

Film: The Shawshank redemption

Reason: Possibly the best piece of movie history, in my opinion. It gives out the message that their is always hope. And tells the story of a man who gets jailed for a crime he didn't commit, and the story of his life in the Shawshank Prision

Film: Belleville Rendezvous

Reason: Hardly any speaking... just freaky animation that looks really cool and confusing plot...did I mention when there is dialogue it's spoken in french?

Film: The Tune

Reason: It's an animated musical by Bill Plympton (most would know his work from the old geico commercials) and it is fabulous! Yah, the word musical would usually turn people off, but its hilarious and definately worth watching.

Movie: Richard Pryor Live in Concert

Technically not a movie but anyone who simulates the death screams of his car tyres just after shooting them with a magnum deserves mad props!

P.S. Hi guys, this is my first post.

Very good film. Try:

Film: Princess Mononoke

Made by the creator(s) or Spirited Away, this film is very compelling and has a complex yet simple storyline, in a way. Just watch this film, and any other Studio Ghibli film [Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, The Cat Returns].

:slash: :slash:
movie : leon

reason : it has the greatest plot i have ever seen. plus the gunfight at the end is spectacular and its funny when you see the corrupt cop getting blown to pieces at the end. also good acting from jean reno, gary oldman and a 13-14 year old natalie portman who is in star wars at the moment :)
