it's that time of year again kids, and this is the place to discuss the winners, the losers, the outfits and the speeches.
so far, so good - Billy Crystal was both funny and in tune. loved the song he sang on Clint's lap.
LOTR has picked up 2 awards already for the asthetics, so it won't be long before they get the acting awards. i'm not sure they'll make it 11 out of 11, but i reckon they'll sweep the boards non the less. runner up will be Cold Mountian, i reckon.
Scarlet Johansen is looking teh fox - v Marilyn-esque and Renne looks wierd.
best actor? Johnny or Bill Murry? it's a too close to call, i reckon.
best picture should be Lost In Translation, but i din't think it'll happen.
anyways - enough ramblings - over to you...

billy crystal is stunningly unfunny, and his song was a disgrace
lotr will win a lot... possibly all 11
bill murray will win best actor

Me think so too. I honestly don't give a damn about the Oscars. The only award show that should matter is the People's Choice one.

i couldn't watch, it was draining brain cells by the second. i normally like billy crystal, but he put me off with the opening song. the dig about downloading movies wasn't all that funny especially now before every movie they play some video of some guy whinging on about how much work goes into a movie and how we shouldn't download them. this irritates me as i just paid $8 to go see the movie, but i digress. i also found the song about pete rose a disgrace. yes he gambbled, but that was so a decade ago. it's an old joke that was tired and worn and never really funny to begin with. i saw tim robbins acceptance speech, he went on and on, but his last but was good. i am a bit suprised they didn't cut him off though. the bit they showed for lotr was quite possibily the worst best picture clip evah.
then i got irritated and went to bed. lotr was a fabulous movie, but return of the king was sort fo dissapointing. i think some of the other pictures should have won.
my thoughts,
Yay for Charlieze Theron, Yay for Jude Law, Yay for New Zealand (lucky kiwi's with their pretty landscape and tropical climate), and in the Canadian version (with stupid Brian Mulrooney's son doing the red carpet YARG) Robin Williams made fun of our past Prime Minister and his retirement (god bless Robin Williams)
all in all, its the Oscars, and its always pretty much the same, pretty people, pretty movies, glitz glamour etc.
(I'm annoyed with Lord Of the Rings though)
Also, I thought Whale Rider was good and the little girl that was in it, deserves a mini oscar from me!
and YAY FOR CANADA GETTING BEST FOREIGN FILM
(note the director thanked the "candian goverment of quebec", feds need to support the arts and stop our the separatiste movement, ;) in quebec )
But Yay Canada

Yay! An Aussie got the short film award!
I think it was called Jamie Crumpet... or something like that.
LOTR, congrads! A clean sweep! It is honoured to be classed among the greatest films ever! The only other 2 movies to receive this honour is Titanic and Ben Hur!

Well done LOTR - I think it sums up all the work that has gone into this mamoth project and teh Oscars got it right (although still ignoring Bill Murray) by awarding them with 11 - should have just given them one more cos it beats Titanic's ass with Gandalf's staff (sp?) while having Hobbit's stamp on its feet :D

You know what worries me? If Lord of the Rings truly deserved all those Oscars, how come NONE of the cast were even nominated? Sure, a movie is so much more than the actors in it but even Andy Serkiss was left out.
To be honest I think that the awards should have been very different - the Lord of The Rings Trilogy is great but best film of the year? I don't think so.

probably because the film had far too many big characters. although ian did get nominated for the best supporting actor bafta. i wanted the little 13 year old to win best actress over the others...that wouldve been jolly.
angelina looked absolutely gorgeous of course. as did johnny depp who i wish had won something for jack sparrow because he was the best character ive seen on screen in a while.
well done lotr \o/

People don't really win oscars for pretending to be elves and dwarves. It's sad, but no matter how good the films were the acadamy is always going to look towards actors and actresses who played more 'serious' parts.
I haven't seen RotK yet, but I still think at least Sir Ian McKellen deserved something (I'm guessing his performance in RotK was as good, if not better, than in the other two)

well done lotr \o/ did you see 13? omg she so deserved it/ that movie made me flinch and cry and OMFG many times.
i agree with dibbie, riok was great, but come on, do we really need to shower a movie with 11 oscars just because it was tolkein? yes it was fabulous, but there were so many other great movies.

I'm beginning to dislike the LotR these days.. probably mostly because of my sister. She's always lotr this, orlando bloom that; 'tis annoying!
If it were up to me, I'd throw a couple towards LotR, give Johnny Depp one for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, give that Cruise fellow a little one because he has tried so hard (and because the last samurai wasn't all that bad) and dump the rest on the table of Tarantino + his cast and crew from Kill Bill...
One more bite of LotR and I'll puke my guts out...

diane keaton's outfit scared me, as did uma thurman's. im not sure i really liked charlize's, it seemed a little dull to me.

kill bill was hugely overrated. which is why im glad it didnt win anything (at least i dont think it did, i didnt watch)
however yes lotr didnt deserve all 11. jonny depp in POTC was a brilliant piece of acting, and keira deserves one for being so gorgeous;)

here are my thoughts on why lotr got 11 oscars:
In 50 years most of the other movies showcased at this year's oscars will have probably faded into semi-obscurity (or total obscurity): but lotr will probably reamain fairly strong in everyone's memory. The creation of these 3 movies was a landmark in film-making.

he wasnt joking(or he was but he didnt realize it), coz over 1 million people were employed/involved in LOTR in one way or another

umm Star Wars did that three movie thing too
So did Indiana Jones
what else is a trilogy
Lord of the Rings will fade into obsucrity just like Amadeus did, just like Ben Hur did.
Seriously who has seen both those movies? I *just* watched Amadeus... people who don't live in a generation tend to not watch the great movies of that time period, or at least that is what I've experienced.
I'm not saying they're bad, I'm just not saying they're THAT good.

.
Umm I know that other trilogies exist and I do not generally recommend that they all recieve oscars just for being trilogies.
LOTR is not spectacular because it is a trilogy. It is spectacular because they were very well done . Painstaking detail was taken with them right down to the hand made chain mail armor.
LOTR has heart and a beautiful message in addition to being downright entertaining.
Amadeus is also a great movie in my opinion but I do not think it has had the cultural impact and enormous admiration that LOTR has.. and hell i even like ben hur even though i do not think it is anywhere as good as LOTR
lord of the rings ain't fading away anytime soon. Whether a movie is good or not is a matter of opinion. There is a simply enormous LOTR fanbase out there that not only approves of the movies in general, but also approves of them receiving 11 oscars.
You do not have to like LOTR but alloot of people (of all kinds) do :)

First of all Amadeus and Ben Hur are still generally considered to be some of the greatest movies ever. Just because lots of the younger generations don't watch films like them (probably mainly because they're not on TV much)
And LOTR is different from any other trilogy because of the sheer scale of it, and the fact that all three films were done at the same time.

seriously. lort was good. and i am a big nerd and obsessed and i rused out to buy the extened editions, but, well, i really don't think they should have swept. yeah they were cool, and made lots of money, but come on. in fact i think some of the acting int he last one was quite shite. really i hated every second about frodo and sam. ( i fully expect to be flamed for this) they were whiney. i was pissed they cut important bits out to save for the extended edition. as a whole lotr rules, but just this last movie... a bit weak.

Thank you its like an Idea getting an oscar, not the thing in itself, its getting it because of the greatness that surrounds it.
