Wherewolf? 12- Paranoia

Something has been happening in the city of Pleasant Days. Someone, or some group has been poisoning people with a drug that induces intense paranoia. Most of the city has been infected but there are some people who haven't been turned paranoid yet. Luckily, one old woman has managed to get all the uninfected together and was able to tell them how many of the bad guys there are, from watching out her window at night.

RULES

Players can talk to one another in the thread, and in any other thread in the open forum, no ninja threads. They are not allowed to PM. The purpose of being able to talk in any thread is to increase the amount of paranoia you have for your fellow players. Maybe that thread has the bad guys deciding who to poison, maybe it has the good guys saying who they checked out, maybe it just every day conversation. Who knows?

The game will be won when all the poisoners are arrested, or they have enough of a lead to poison everyone else without being taken out themselves. A majority of over one third of the votes is needed to arrest someone, if there's two people over one third of the total votes, the person with the most votes gets arrested (as opposed to over half). The bad guys just need to give me a majority of their votes.

When you become paranoid you can not start threads about the game. You can not give away things you know. You will be given further instructions about what you believe. (As in when a person is made paranoid, I will give them the name of another player, or keywords that set them off into a paranoid state.)

PLAYERS: Good

Citizens They are scared. They don't know who to trust, they don't know whats happening really, and they are not happy about it. The only things they know is how many bad guys there are (to be decided when people sign up) and that the old ladies house is the only place that's safe for their daily meeting.

Old Lady The narrator, so me. If things need a push, I'll give them. If people aren't playing I'll kick them out. If bad guys aren't voting, they'll get punished. I'm one tough old broad.

Bartender Billy Even in times of paranoia, people need something to drink. When people get too sloshed though, they spill their guts, and sometimes that helps Billy find out the bad guys. Bartender Billy can find out one identity a day.

Taxi Wayne He's a charmer. He comforts you on your ride around town, and you don't even know what you're saying. Wayne can find out 1 persons true allegiance a day.

Bad guys
PoisonersThey're not smart. They're just mean. Some bad drugs floating about and they've got to get rid of it, it just never occurred to them that there's other ways to do that then feeding it to people. They're a loose knit group, no real leader, and non of them can hide their identity from Wayne or Billy.

Cindy She's a civvy, she's pretty, but she's a turncoat. She can't partake in votes to see who to poison, but she knows who they are, and she likes them, she thinks their cute. She will try her best to get people to vote for anyone other than the bad guys. Yeah, girls always go for the bad boys.

From the looks of it, we have 13 people playing, which will make for 4 bad guys. It's a regular 2 days=1 game day format. I'll start the game Saturday or Monday (Sunday there's a parade and they haven't let us know yet if we're doing a few hours of drill on Saturday to prepare for it or not yet. So basically, no drill Saturday means start day of Saturday, drill on Saturday means Monday start since I'll have to work on my uniform for a few hours to get ready for the parade. Mostly boots.)

I'm pretty wigged out about this whole affair.

At one time you could tell who your neighbours were and you didn't need to worry about them trying to poison you. My wife read the paper the other day and claimed that some quantities of a chemical had been stolen or some-such. Anyone can tell that this is all going to end badly. Criminals could do anything with that stuff! I want to be the first to say that I'll be keeping an ear to the ground in an effort to root out the miscreants.

Very dangerous situation. Very, very dangerous. You all keep your doors locked and if anyone knows anything, get the information out there please!

A policeman came around the houses the other day asking questions but we haven't a clue so I had to tell him that I have no suspects at the moment...

I'd tried to sit near the back of the room, I knew most of the people in town to see but I didn't really know them.

As the old woman motioned everyone to sit I looked over the crowd. My first observation was at the general air of anxiety. Apprehension gripped me as I saw a few people eye me with a look I could not quite read... Certainly not favourable looks. I braced myself for the worst as the crowd grew restless. Various names were thrown around the room, no pattern was evident though I heard my name a few times and dread filled me. Something struck me though, a man I'd only seen in passing but did not know by name was decidedly angry and lashed out at another who had sheepishly made a suggestion of who he thought the culprit could have been. Reacting to your own name being called out would have been hard to take with composure but the hostility of Ello Guv'ner was palpable. Small Fry had been the only choice I thought I could make but that was based on pure guesswork and, I must admit, a randomness of thought.

I spied a questionable man from across the room giving me a look that rose suspicion in my gut, he seemed a reserved man, on his own at the back, yet i could see it in his eye, his mind was working over every word uttered, every name carelessly dropped in the meeting. I do not know his name for sure but something in the back of my mind hints at Martinus, but i must be careful with every word i say lest i be falsely incarcerated or even worse watch as my mind slowly deteriorates before my own eyes after drinking a funny glass of water or being slipped something in my morning corn flakes. I will not make my mind up just yet.

Edit/ on later speculation i found the names Vercci and captain caveman of questionable integrity.

Consider that I chose small fry when we were first called to the old lady's house. I did this in a fashion I considered fairer than simply shouting out the name of the person who had shouted before myself. Verifying a culprit was not possible at this point, instead of implicating the poor soul unfortunate enough to have gone before me I chose a random name.

If you reconsider my vote you would have noticed a rather odd and non-obvious cypher I added should my innocence be questioned at some future juncture. Look and you will see the result that my automatic calculation apparatus generated when I asked it to return a number in the range of one to seventeen. I will then point you to the town census, note the number of citizens and the name of the sixteenth person on the list! As you can see this name was not chosen intentionally and thus, were I a poisoner, I would not have used this mechanism to determine a citizen for fear of poisoning my conspirators. No sir, I am not a poisoner and you are implicating an innocent man.

Whilst I can see that some of the townsfolk are implicating me through some level of deduction I am horrified at the callous, flippant nature of Littleshore's decision.

Again i could see Martinus's powerful skills of deduction at work and, having come to the same conclusion, i voted to help him and possibly form a level of understanding between us, so i vote Littleshore. It also looked like Littleshore was looking to through Martinus of his trail by joining the unfortunate bandwagon that had formed to essentially socially lynch poor Martinus.

Anyways, let's amuse the crowd. In my head, it's pretty clear that at least three of the people who accuses me of poisoning the poor Small Fry does this because I voted for him the last round and thus is an easy target for execution. Or at least for namedropping in to a poisonous trap.

Quite interesting though that Martinus(which i have already voted for) the king of smoke, mirrors and namedrops manages to amass such support, and from such a band of ruffians. And so early in the game aswell! Really interesting..

harryashfield, I never quite got you. Did you "forget" to check the next page, or are you just playing forgetful?

'Ello Guvner, the second most dangerous after Martinus, you are most certainly also a poisoner. Uses a lot of words, but says very little.

Nothing could have prepared me for the last meeting. One assumes that when you're endeavouring to protect the public that the public themselves would support you. The common good seemed like an alien concept. Even so, I steeled myself and decided to press on and that the only course of action was to force one of the heinous poisoners to slip and reveal some morsel of information. Voting seems to taken a sinister new twist: Inference has been abandoned in favour of hearsay and loose conjecture. Little time remains before fear overcomes the populace and we are all lost; the poisoners, whilst sharing a petty malevolence, have somehow remained hidden.

One can only hope that those who are able to gain more information through their occupation may be able to help us before another of our number falls to madness. Knowing who is a malcontent is difficult at this point, I can only suggest that Turkey Sandwich seems to have some kind of vendetta against Shalashaska; claiming randomness and selecting the same person twice consecutively is highly dubious behaviour.

Ah, darnit, I really had no idea I had already voted for him. I was in too much of a rush to notice that, as the uni computer room was closing and I was finding the day's events rather confusing. :(

I noted that he was the next person above me with no votes, and of course that is what I meant by 'randomly'; I don't see what's so suspect about that, it's the same tactic everyone uses. I mean, come on, if I were a poisoner, do you really think I'd be stupid enough to deliberately put myself in the firing line by voting for him again, for no benefit? Not like he got poisoned or anything.

So to show there are no hard feelings I'll vote for the person above ('Ello Guv'ner) and hope that a bandwagon doesn't start against me.

At one time you could tell who your neighbours were and you didn't need to worry about them trying to poison you. My wife read the paper the other day and claimed that some quantities of a chemical had been stolen or some-such. Anyone can tell that this is all going to end badly. Also, on the day that Small Fry was poisoned, Littleshore voted for Small Fry, whilst creating what seems to me to be a name drop, by saying "Small Fry seems shady.....". Though arguably he was simply voting for the person above him, it seems mighty suspicious to me that it was on the day that Small Fry was voted off.

By the way, I am NOT claiming to be either Bartender Bill or Taxi Driver Wayne! I am just a normal civilian.

I am also extremely suspicious of captain caveman, who has so far only voted for non-poisoners, assuming that Shalashaska is not a poisoner.

EDIT: After looking through at the people that Shalashaska has voted for, they have all turned out to be innocent too. (counting the vote which was originally for Martinus to count as Martinus instead of happy-go-lucky, as he may have changed his vote because of the bandwagon that was forming.) Fine, it can be argued that it is suspicious that I was the only one voting for Small Fry in the second round, but come on. Littleshores lawyer here. He says that in the beginning most people voted for sha but changed their vote around the time you started analyzing who to blame. Also, why poison a person that was certain to be put in prison? Why not the other? You could have gotten both of em and won the game simple. Also not that smart voting off someone who a poisoner was the only person to namedrop.(Littleshore was the one that got a warning that time)

You know Eschaton, it all boils down to fear. The poisoners tried to impress their ideas on others through fear, Ello Guvner killed himself in fear, we arrested these men in fear of what they might do and finally, Elbowman-iac has killed the others in fear of retribution. If this village has taught me anything, it's that the only thing to fear is fear itself.

And that the village definitely shouldn't be called Pleasant Days.
