My younger brother is something of a japanophile and bought this pretty looking film to my attention:
Casshern--->Official Casshern website (jap) (http://www.casshern.com) --->Hi-Res trailer (56k destroyer) (http://202.212.245.207/mov/trailer480.mov)
Of course I dont speak a word of japper babble (if anyone could translate...) but think it looks stunning.
This set me thinking: what your favourite asian (china/japan/korea) movie and why? How do you think they compare to western films?
I'm thinking live action primarily but also animation...
I'm very into The Warrior (aka musa:the warrior) at the moment.
It perfectly captures what I think is the core ingredient of asian films - duty.
Also its beautifully shot and tells a simple, but compelling story.

i have a love with the japanease director Akira Kurosawa, his movies have influenced many big budget films such as star wars, fist full of dollars and the magnificent seven, i also like the modern contrevertial films out of japan at the moment like battle royal and ichi the killer

Battle royale was a masterpiece! I can't say I've seen Ichi the Killer, but Battle Royale left me speechless.
+ rated for liking it!

ooo thankies, if you liked battle royal you should like ichi, look into it. simply its a super-violent film about a bunch of crazy yakuza and this ichi is a deranged phsycotic who enjoys mutilating pretty much everything. i also heard about this film called versus the other day which is supposed to be a cinematic masterpiece and a brutal zombie movie all in one.

I liked battle royale and ring but I can't say I've seen all too many infact... thats it. So from my limited perspective oriental filmage is the bomb.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon!
Great plot, really well directed, good actors, and brilliant matrix-style effects :D
I thought the dubbing spoilt it though, made the voices less passionate and not really fit with the mouth movements. It was much better when I saw it in the cinema with english subtitles.

Can't wait for the second one, but the storyline is crapper.
