This will probably be hectic, as it is the first ever game of Diplomacy that has been run on the Weebl's Stuff Forum, but I will be happy to extend time periods if people are still indecisive about where to move, and I will tell people if they have given me an order which is impossible to carry out.

Feel free to ask me any questions you may have, or if you would like some tactics for your country.
EDIT: I am no longer giving out tactics, as you should all know what you are doing by now. You can still ask me questions about the rules though.

Good luck to everyone, and remember to get your knives sharpened, ready to backstab!

The game begins NOW!!

Franz Malcolio I of Austria here, keen to establish diplomatic relations with other European countries. Well, rich and influential countries, anyway. I have only peaceful intentions for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but that won't preclude me from assisting the development of the poorer nation states to my southern borders.

26-09-2009, 05:53 PM
Malcolio, you can have Rumania and Serbia if I can have Bulgaria and Greece.
:D

Hmm...I guess that's a good deal. As long as that's all you're taking! One wrong move and the armies of the Duel Monarchy will march to Constantinople!

What-ho old chaps, jolly old England here!
Pie Hunter, if you leave Belgium and Holland for me (or at least for me and Zhyl to fight over), I'll leave you alone so you can take Spain and Portugal. Otherwise I'll have no choice but to invade Europe via Brest and Picardy, and neither of us want that. Fair?

Oh and there's just one thing I'm confused about, JackCopsey - what happened to summer?

JackCopsey
26-09-2009, 06:46 PM
Don't ask me - ask Avalon Hill. In the official rules, there are only a Spring, Fall and Winter phase.

I would like Denmark, but nothing else immediately takes my fancy. Turkey Sandwich can have Holland FOR NOW.

Also, do we PM our moves to the OP?

Pie hunter D

PM your moves to JC. He's like god in this game.

No one so much as FARTS that he does not/should not know about.

Ciao, buongiorno, etc.

King [murr]berto XXXVI of Italy here!

I am a sad King because it is difficult to communicate solely via the use of body language if we're negotiating through PM. :( < that is my sad King face.

Edit: If I take a while to reply I'm not ignoring you it's just that currently the only connection I have is at my dads, where I no longer live. I may also be ignoring you.

Franz Malcolio I of the Austro-Hungarian Empire is pleased to announce an ever-lasting and prosperous entente with the good peoples of Italy. The signing of the Adriatic Accord will ensure that our nations will stand firm together and perhaps be the start of a strong alliance to strengthen the lands of Southern Europe.

Great, everyone has joined in, and the game can begin properly now. (Arfmaster posted on the sign-up thread for some reason)

This means I can give you your first deadline - Please send me all moves you want to do this turn by Monday 28th September, 10 PM (22:00). There are 3 people who have not sent me their moves yet. You know who you are, so please sort it out by Monday.

I have given a couple of people who are new to this game some advice. After all, it is a complex game to learn. Feel free to PM me and ask for some tactics, as I would be more than happy to help for this game only.

And by the way, malcolio and [murray], I like your in-character posts. Keep it up!

[murray]

The Italian royal family wishes to express its fondest gratitude to the Austrian leader for his kind and generous gift of a very large sausage to coincide with the signing of this famous accord. They also express the greatest hope that our return gift of the arms of the Venus de Milo were just as graciously received in the court of Vienna.

Emperor Franz Malcolio I is shocked at the invasion by the despicable Russian Army of German soil. He and the people of Austro-Hungary pray for a peaceful solution to this rash act by Russia, and hope that any bloodshed comes to an end soon. To this purpose, he will ensure that his northern forces are arrayed to defend against any further Russian offences.

This sorrowful news may perhaps be lightened by the following though:

Emperor Franz Malcolio I is overjoyed at the welcoming of the heroic Austro-Hungarian Army into Serbian and Albanian soil. He and the people of Austro-Hungary pray for a glorious completion by our forces, and hope that any peacekeeping comes to an end soon. To this purpose, he will ensure that his southern forces are arrayed to liberate any further Serbian or Albanian people.

Some of you may be thinking that I forgot to do your moves. I did conduct every move I was sent, but some of them failed. They can fail for many reasons, but the two most common reasons are a bounce and a fail.

A bounce is when two armies of equal strength attack a province, or an attacking army is of equal strength to a defending army. In the attacking instance, both units move back to where they were originally. In the defending instance, the attacker moves back, and the defender stays where they are. Common examples include two armies bouncing out of a Supply Centre, and a supported attacker (worth 2) attacking a supported defender (also worth 2).

A fail is a move which is impossible to conduct for some reason or another. You may be trying to do 2 things with an army at once, supporting an attack which you can't reach, moving to a space which you are not adjacent to or not telling the fleet to convoy your army.

Now that that's out of the way, let's continue.

It is now Winter, 1901. You don't move in this stage; you build instead. You can build any units in your Home Supply Centres. (the Supply Centres you started with) The amount of units you can build is based on how many Supply Centres you own. Obviously you can't build a Fleet inland, before someone makes this inevitable mistake... ;)

France and Russia bagged 3 Supply Centres this turn, an admirable feat, and get to build three new units.

England, Austria and Italy all gained a modest 1 Supply Centre, and hence get to build one new unit.

Germany and Turkey both gained a Supply Centre, but also lost one. Their number of units is equal to their number of Supply Centres, and thus they don't get to build this turn.

You have until Friday 2nd October, 22:00 PM to send me your builds, and I will end this deadline earlier if I receive everyone's builds before then.

In further details of the Failed Orders, England launched a Supported Attack on Holland, with support coming from France. At the same time, Germany launched an Unsupported Attack on Holland. Because this meant that there was a force of 2 vs 1, England's move succeeded, and Germany's move failed.

In the other failed orders, both England and Russia moved a Fleet into the Barents Sea. These were of equal strength, and so they bounced back to their original territories (Norway and St. Petersburg).

It is now Fall, 1902. This is a Move phase. Your next deadline for moves is Monday, 5th October at 10 PM. (I will try and keep to the time limits this time)

Before you see the map, I'd just like to remind you how crucial diplomacy is at this stage in the game. I'm sure all of you are frantically whizzing PMs to and fro out of your inbox, but I must stress the importance of forming alliances with other players.

Right then, without further ado, here is the map after your Fall 1902 moves were conducted:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2663/3984279413_aa72ec4e48_b.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2663/3984279413_0d22cefb27_o.png)

(As always, orders can be found here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/weebls-stuff-diplomacy/3984279413/in/set-72157622475358892/).)

Failed Orders:

Army Belgium to Ruhr - BOUNCED
Fleet Western Mediterranean to the Mid-Atlantic Ocean - OVERPOWERED

In regards to the second failed order; Italy did an unsupported attack on the Mid-Atlantic Ocean, whilst France did a supported attack on the Western Mediterranean. Because there was a force of 2 moving into the Western Mediterranean, this was the move which succeeded, whereas Italy's move failed.

Usually people will get 24 hours to choose where to retreat to, or their retreating unit will automatically be destroyed. However, in this instance Fleet Western Mediterranean can ONLY retreat to Tunis; there is a unit in every other adjacent space which it could retreat to. (excluding Mid-Atlantic, which is where the attack came from)

The same thing happened with the Russian Army in Berlin; it could only retreat to Prussia, so automatically retreated there.

In any case, this is what supply centres look like at the end of this turn. It is now Winter, 1902. For some countries, this period of peace is a chance to rebuild forces; for others, the lack of supplies has led to units dying.

England, Austria and Turkey each get to build two more Units.

France and Italy remain on the same amount of Units.

Germany and Russia actually have more Units than Supply Centres, and as a consequence each lose 1 unit.

Please PM me what you would like to build this move, or what you will reluctantly have to destroy. Your deadline is Wednesday, 7th October by 8 AM, but I will end the round earlier if I receive everyone's builds before then.

P.S. Pie hunter D - I'm afraid that we're only at the beginning of the 19th Century, and Teleportation Devices don't exist; yet...

Emperor Franz Malcolio I regrets having to enter German lands with his humanitarian forces, however it was clear the country was in chaos and that the Germanic people needed governance during these difficult times. He is keen to see that Berlin is regained, and hopes that in due course Munich may be given back to the German government once law and order has been restored. He thanks the French and Russian armies for support in this successful peace keeping operation.

I also sincerely hopes that clashes in the Mediterranean and Barents Sea end with all haste. Such needless violence should not occur between any forward-thinking empires.

EDIT: After a bit of nagging, I finally got everyone's orders in. And I must say, this is probably one of the most hectic moves we have had thus far! Here is what the map looks like:

Failed Orders: (There are a lot of them!)

English Fleet St. Petersburg to Barents Sea - Bounced
German Fleet Kiel supports Army Berlin - Support Cut
German Army Berlin supports Fleet Kiel - Support Cut
Russian Fleet Denmark to Kiel - Overpowered
Russian Army Moscow to St. Petersburg - Bounced
Russian Fleet Barents Sea supports Army Moscow to St. Petersburg - Support Cut
Russian Army Sevastopol holds - Overpowered

The Germany Army in Berlin could not retreat anywhere, so it was automatically destroyed. Similarly, the Russian Army in Sevastopol could only retreat to the Ukraine, so that's where it had to go.

However, the German Fleet in Kiel can retreat to either the Helgoland Bight or the Baltic Sea.

For this reason, it is now Spring Retreat, 1903. Only Germany can send me any moves this turn; in fact, they can only send me where they would like to retreat to with their Fleet in Kiel. Your deadline is Today, at 10 PM. I will be much more strict this time, and if you miss the deadline, your Fleet will be destroyed!

In other news, Constantinople was shocked today as a group of strangely dressed soldiers mysteriously appeared out of nowhere in the city centre. When asked about their purpose, they said only incomprehensible words such as "Bonjour" and "Je ne comprends pas".

(If you're that obsessed, click here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/weebls-stuff-diplomacy/3995597407/) for this move's order)

The German Government has been forced to retreat to the Helgoland Bight, with the last of their Navy, after an attack on Kiel earlier this year. With Germany graciously surrendering its land to England, France, Austria and Russia, it shall soon be time for the remaining governments to decide on their next victim...

It is now Fall, 1903. As requested by Arfmaster, the next deadline for moves will be Sunday 11th October, 10 PM.

Sorry about the lateness, but I was still waiting for orders from Pie hunter. (I should have posted something) I still haven't received any orders, and as a consequence, he misses his move.

Other than that, it's a very interesting round, with more failed orders than ever before...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2497/4003246061_a509c58723_b.jpg (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2497/4003246061_dd5f208961_o.png)

(A full list of orders is right here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/weebls-stuff-diplomacy/4003246061/))

Failed Orders:

English Army Kiel to Berlin - BOUNCED
Austrian Army Rumania to the Ukraine - BOUNCED
Russian Army Ukraine to Sevastopol - EQUAL POWER
Russian Army Moscow supports Army Ukraine to Sevastopol - EQUAL POWER
Russian Fleet Denmark to Kiel - BOUNCED
Russian Army Berlin supports Fleet Denmark to Kiel - SUPPORT CUT
Russian Fleet Barents Sea holds - OVERPOWERED

If you look at these orders, you shall see that only 1 Russian Move succeeded this turn. However, don't laugh too much England.

The Russian Fleet in the Barents Sea was forced to retreat to Norway. (I'm sure Arfmaster doesn't mind that much though... ;)) However, the Russian Fleet in Denmark can retreat to either Skagerrak or the Baltic Sea.

For this reason, it is now Fall Retreat 1903. Your deadline will be 23:00 PM Today. (Monday 12th October) I only need in one move from Arfmaster; as soon as I receive it, the round will end, and it you will all get a chance to build (or destroy) some more units. And this deadline is very strict!

I would just like to give a small applaud to the German Government; though their efforts at negotiation were unsuccessful, they were gracious in defeat, and very kindly shared their land between England, France, Austria and Russia. The question is; who will be the next target?

(And the answer is Russia)

It is now Winter 1903. If you recall, this is a Build Phase, so you cannot move any of your units about.

England, France, Austria and Turkey all get to build 1 more unit in the Home Supply Centre of their choice.

Italy once again remains on the same number of units.

Germany loses its Fleet in the Helgoland Bight, which means Zyhl is out of the game.

Russia has to destroy 3 of its units. (It would have been 4, had it not been for the retreat into Norway...)

Please PM me your builds by Tuesday 13th October, 23:00 PM. This will be strict, and if you miss the deadline, you miss your builds! (If Russia misses the deadline, I will destroy the units furthest away from its Home Supply Centres)

I may extend the deadline, if this short time gap between moves is too awkward for people, and there are 3 or more people who haven't sent me builds.

EDIT: After yet again failing to send me orders, Pie hunter D has been removed from the game, and Trickian has now officially taken his place. Also, Arfmaster took too long to change his failed order (see below), so it has stuck.

Right then, after some backstabbing and confusion, the map looks like this:

Russian Fleet Norway to Finland - FAILED
Turkish Army Constantinople to Bulgaria - BOUNCED
Turkish Fleet Black Sea to Constantinople - BOUNCED

The Turkish Army in Greece had nowhere to retreat to, so it was automatically destroyed. The Russian Fleet in Norway could only retreat to Skagerrak.

Army Livonia supports Army St. Petersburg to hold - Overpowered

Turkey
Army Constantinople to Bulgaria - Overpowered
Fleet Black Sea to Constantinople - Bounced
Fleet Smyrna to the Aegean Sea
Army Moscow holds
Army Sevastopol supports Army Moscow to hold

The Russian Army in St. Petersburg had nowhere to retreat to, and was destroyed.

It is now Winter 1904, a chance for some troops to rest, and strengthen their forces, ready to attack next year. For others, it is a time of despair and starvation, as troops haven’t got enough supplies to survive the harsh coldness of Winter.

France gets 2 builds this year, in part due to its sneaky backstabbing of England. ;)

England, Italy and Austria have enough supply centres to support 1 more unit each.

Turkey remains on the same amount of units, due to the Austro-Italian Alliance.

Russia has now lost all of its Supply Centres, and thus is out of the game. All of its units will be automatically destroyed, and as a result every other territory Russia owned has become neutral, as it has lost military control.

Please PM me your builds for this phase by Tuesday 20th October, 22:00 PM.

After successfully extending its Empire, England has bagged itself 2 builds.

Austria, though not quite as lucky, still gets the reasonable result of 1 build.

France, after a fairly unfortunate round, manages to scrape in with no builds.

Italy and Turkey are both one Supply Centre down, and as a result, both have to destroy 1 unit.

It is now Spring 1906. By the look of the map, I would say the game has reached its half-way mark. BUILDS:

England and Italy both get to build 1 more unit, in the home supply centre of their choice.

Austria and France remain on the same number of units.

Turkey has to disband 1 unit.

In case some of you are wondering, the Turkish move “Army Rumania supports Fleet Constantinople to Bulgaria” failed because you cannot support an attack against one of your own units. In real life, it just doesn’t make sense!

It is now Winter 1906, and many questions remain. Will Turkey recover from their dire situation? Who will Austria target next, after (and if) Turkey is destroyed? Can Italy defend against French attack without losing its foothold in Turkey? Can France successfully expand Eastwards? And will the mighty English Empire ever be defeated? Find out after the break!

By the way, the break ends on Monday 2nd November, 22:00 PM, so please send me your builds by this time.

Unfortunately for some of you, your units left a supply centre before you captured it. So Spain and Constantinople were not actually captured by a different country, and Turkey continues to cling on to the game.

It is now Winter, 1907. In addition to the builds below, Arfmaster needs to choose whether his Army in Venice retreats to Tuscanny or Apulia. (or alternatively, if it is destroyed)

BUILDS:

Austria has skillfully managed to steal itself 3 more builds this go; the maximum number possible!

England has achieved the reasonable result of being able to build one more unit.

Due to what seems to be a cross between a miracle and well-formulated tactics, Turkey is able to stay on the same number of units.

After a ruthless English invasion, France has to destroy 1 unit.

Italy has to destroy 2 units, after a rather malicious Austrian backstab.

Please send me your builds by Sunday 8th November, 22:00 PM. As always, the build will end early if I receive everyone’s orders in before the deadline.

07-11-2009, 01:07 AM
Emperor Franz Malcolio I of the Austro-Hungarian Empire regrets having to break the Adriatic Accord that had held his nation so closely to that of the Italian Empire. He feels that the state is undermined by the French invasion into it's heartland, and feels that the Italian rule of it's Turkish possessions was harsh and oppressive.

However, he hopes that the Eighth Coalition will still strive to remove the French aggression from the continent, which still threatens every nation in it.

malcolio
07-11-2009, 10:51 PM
I'm now also wondering why the move into Burgundy wasn't successful. The move from the Ruhr to Burgundy was supported by Munich and Belgium, so should have succeeded as Burgundy was not supported in defence. 2 units should not be able to stop 3 units!

The rules as I see it state that support is only cut if the unit giving support is attacked from any province except the one where support is being given. So the attack by Burgundy on Munich wouldn't have cut the support Munich gave, so the move should have succeeded.

Sorry for nit picking these things btw, but I'm trying to come up to speed on the rules and looking over what's happened is the only way I'll learn them! :)

JackCopsey
08-11-2009, 06:10 AM
I always assumed that a unit always cut support from a province if it moved there, regardless of where the province was. However...

Note that a unit occupying the province into which the support is directed cannot cut support.

All my life that I've played Diplomacy, I never realised that this was the rule. So many unfair games that I've played! :(

I won't change any of the past maps, for reasons of simplicity alone. But from now on I would be happy to accept this new rule, that a unit cannot cut support being given to that unit's province. Thanks malcolio for bringing this to my attention.

(Now who's the smart arse?)

Army Paris could not retreat anywhere, and was consequently destroyed.

Italy
Army Apulia was forced to retreat to Rome.
As a result, Fleet Tuscany was forced to retreat to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Army Smyrna was forced to retreat to Syria.

BUILDS:

England managed to rather amazingly take 4 supply centres from France! (although these were arguably surrendered) Unfortunately, England only gets to build the maximum of 3 units in its home supply centres.

Austria secured the decent result of 2 more supply centres, and gets to build 2 more units.

Turkey unfortunately just lost its last supply centre. As a result, it automatically loses Fleet Black Sea, and is out of the game.

Italy had a pretty bad round, losing 1 supply centre and unit.

France had a disastrous round! They lost 4 supply centres, but must only destroy 3 units, as the Army in Paris has kindly been killed by English troops.

It is now Winter 1908, and the game has almost drawn to its conclusion. If you want to propose a draw, now would be a good time to do it. Alternatively, you could keep quiet, and perform a dastardly backstab...

The Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire regrets the border clashes in British-held territory, but sees it as a justified measure against aggression in the area, especially that of the open military movements in the Mediterranean, that can have no other purpose but to breach the Tunis Treaty.

He hopes peace in Europe can be found soon, as such the Emperor's armed forces will continue to advance into Italian provinces and put an end to British ambitions on the continent.

Prime Minister Sandwich would like to express dismay that the preemtive measures against the expansionistic Austro-Hungarian Empire have turned out to be justified and indeed necessary.

This is a sad day for Europe.

To speak nothing of the sad day in Africa. Such hypocrisy on the part of the British Prime Minister is to be expected though, to cover up the imperialistic aims of his country whilst playing down the protection the Austro-Hungarian Empire offers to the French possession of Tunis.

The Austro-Hungarian armed forces will prevail against the British Empire, and Emperor Franz Malcolio I will see to it that all nations under the yoke of British oppression will have their self-determination realised.

The British Empire never has, nor ever will, enter any parts of the African continent which it is not entitled to, such as the sovereign French nation of Tunis, and does not believe that the French government will be fooled by such a blatant slur from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, especially given the clear intention of said Empire to invade Naples. Prime Minister Sandwich would like to remind the Austro-Hungarian government that he was the very person who brokered the Tunis Treaty, against the advice of Emperor Franz Malcolio I!

Also the British Empire is not the one trying to take out Italy. :p

Emperor Franz Malcolio I advises the British Prime Minister to sack his Admiral of the Fleet then, for sending his Atlantic and Mediterranean Fleets into African waters for apparently no reason. He also wonders how the Prime Minister can say that he is against the Treaty of Tunis, considering the Austro-Hungarian Empire is a signatory to it.

On the contary to the Prime Minister's beliefs, the Grand Navy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire has permission from the French government in exile to move through the Ionian Sea. Making mention of the ongoing war with Italy only makes the Emperor wonder which nation put the French government in exile in the first place...

Prime Minister Sandwich also has permission to be in the area surrounding Northern Africa, as per the Tunis Treaty, and evidently has more faith in the French premiere's judgement than the Austo-Hungarian Emperor does!

It appears as if an anonymous country will not have sent in their orders within the deadline. For this reason, it will be extended to tomorrow morning, simply because this is such an important point in the game that a single set of missed orders could cause a country to be destroyed.

Franz Malcolio I of the Austro-Hungarian Empire sees no reason for the aggression on the European continent to continue. The French Empire in exile is welcome to it's holdings in Naples and Tunis, whilst the British Empire may remain in command of it's possessions in the west and north of Europe. Despite British forces invading North Africa and encircling Austro-Hungarian provinces, he sees that the Prime Minister would be wise to this bloodshed and proclaim this war to be over, for the benefit of all.

19-11-2009, 12:46 PM
Prime Minister Sandwich would like to express disappointment with the French premiere's decision to sell out the Italians, but must say that it is not unexpected. He also finds it interesting that a draw is proposed by the Austro-Hungarian Empire just at the point when they are in a somewhat poor tactical position.

The British Empire demands that the Austrians hand back the land taken from His Majesty before the war ends, as clearly this shocking breach of the Entente cannot stand. The British Empire has not invaded any Austrian territory before now, after all.

However, Prime Minister Sandwich does pledge to cease all hostilities by the end of 1910, regardless of outcome, to ensure that the war in Europe does not take an unnecesary toll on its populace.
Clearly a war of attrition will take far too long, and with the reclamation of its stolen land, the British Empire will be satisfied with a draw.

Therefore the British Empire chooses to defer the draw until the end of next year.

The Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire is saddened at the loss of Italian forces. Were he not compelled to act against their hostile nature he would surely have welcomed the continual of the Adriatic Accord. Still, he hopes that fighting in the Italian peninsula will soon be at an end, and Italian subjects under the Austro-Hungarian crown will be treated as full and free civilians of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

It figures the Prime Minister of the UK is still keen to shed blood, having landed an army into North Africa and sending forces into Venice. Or were they peaceful manoeuvres as well? In any case, your claim that British forces have not invaded Austro-Hungarian held land is a falsehood.

The Emperor hopes that the Prime Minister at least keeps to his offer of a ceasefire in the new year. Such a callous attitude to the lives of others is shameful at best, to deliberately wage war when a peace deal has been offered from all other belligerents. The Emperor guesses this is something the French King noticed, hence his decision not to make any deals with the British Empire. On the contrary, the skilled deployment of his fleets in safe-guarding Rome from hostile forces is a diplomatic triumphant, as the Austro-Hungarian navy upheld the Tunis Treaty. Pity that not all great powers could be so rational and peaceful...

If the Emperor cares to study the wording of the Tunis Treaty, he will find that North Africa has remained, by right, the territory of the British Empire; and, while a military incursion into Tunis itself may at one stage have been considered, it was not ultimately attempted.

Also, while British and Austro-Hungarian forces have clashed, for example in Venice, it is certainly true that not only have British forces never actually invaded any Austrian provinces, but also that any skirmishes have occurred only after Austria-Hungary broke the Entente. These facts, coupled with the Austo-Hungarian invasion of St. Petersburg and attempted invasion of other provinces, make the Emperor's cries of agression and Imperialism seem rather hypocritical.

to deliberately wage war when a peace deal has been offered from all other belligerents... On the contrary, the skilled deployment of his fleets in safe-guarding Rome from hostile forces is a diplomatic triumph. Pity that not all great powers could be so rational and peaceful...

It is very easy to appear rational and peaceful in comparison to a righteous army intending justice for Europe when one's Imperialistic aims have been accomplished, and when one's current desire is to retain control over said conquered countries. Desire for continued domination is often masked by an ostensible desire for peace.
Prime Minister Sandwich also hardly needs to point out that the Austrian forces were the hostile forces in Rome, a territory which the British Empire attempted to restore to its rightful people, the Italians.

The war will end this coming year no matter what, but the British Empire will be victorious. Rule Britannia!
