I think that Amy or whatever her name is is in the wrong band, shes way better than the rest of them.
I dont see them being around for another album, te woman and the other singer reputedly despise each other.

I am not a fan of this band whom I can hardly spell.

i am not a fan of this band, and they are not unique, they just had a lucky shot.
i dont like their particular combination of music, and the female singer seems to get on my nerves a lot, i dont know why at the moment. and i dont have anything against female singers, i know lots of goot metal female singers.
also evnescanece seem to be becoming more warped to what the public wants, not keeping with their style

linkin park with a female singer. Need i say more?
in my opinion, some people think they're christian rock. They aren't. Some people think they're goth rock. They aren't. They're just kiddie metal, but because they have a woman singing and wear black and stuff, people think they're more than that.

this band seems to be the one hit bands. One good song and they're gone , but i could be wrong. Its sorta like alien ant farm's smooth criminal and then after that hit the bands pretty much dead.
I dont think they're full rock or anything atm. Maybe alternative ?. But they're not rock. I would suggest a "other category".
And no i dont like this band but i dont hate it.

I agree with shpooz. 1 hit wonders (hopefully) i dont like them very much at all. they come across to me as mainstream wannabes. BUT I may know nothing. and if I dont, then dont bother telling me cause they aint what i like to listen to anyways so i probably wont bother coming back into this topic again. :p

Maybe they are 1 hit wonders (so far), but so what?
If it wasnt for them, I would never have spoken to Jo and we probably would'nt've gotten together. :D
Whatever they are, I like the music they make, nuff said.

alternative music is alternative to pop, right? and if that music becomes popular it is considered pop, hence the name. like coldplay for instance.
PoofBird
03-10-2003, 12:06 PM
that is not, in general, the definition of pop...
metal does not stop being metal when it is popular...
to artists, pop is about melody and songwriting...
for that reason, many alternative acts consider themselves to be pop. Often they're called indie instead of alternative, but that effectively means the same thing.
I agree, Dont hate the playas, hate the game.

I agree wholeheartedly!
I don't hate 'mainstream' music - the only thing I hate is the people who treat ME badly simply because I like something that's not to THEIR taste.
When I originally started getting into metal, it was about liking what YOU want to like, not following what anyone else says in order to be 'cool' and not judging others because of the music they listen to.
It seems to have become a clique, a group that don't like outsiders listening to 'their' music, a community almost, who shun those who don't hate what they hate.
That is what I ran away from when I donned my DM's and black eyeliner. It wasn't about fashion, it was about showing the world that I wouldn't judge anyone if they wouldn't judge me. The metal 'image' to me, meant something good - not a reason to hate other people.
Well said, Pinkerbell.

The 'meaning' of the word alternative is such a massive debate at the moment.
It's just a damn word!
It shouldn't matter what category or label a band comes under, whether it's 'alternative', or 'pop' or whatever - people should like the music for the music, not for how it makes them look when they wear that particular bands' t-shirt/hoodie/random item of clothing or accessory, etc.
Jeff The Jiff
03-10-2003, 01:32 PM
yeah, i agree. i hate people using words like indie, pop, underground and alternative because there isnt a definate meaning to them, they're just whatever each person thinks.

Ah, but there are definite meanings to all of those words, they are simply styles of music that have specific features that make them clearly of that order, and thus their definitions are specific, but often difficult to comprehend unless you have some knowledge of music. The trouble is many different styles can merge into one another, in the same way a red can look like an orange.
The trouble arises when people use words that they don't understand - and to claim that you have your own definition of a word is nonsensical.
On Evanescence - having listened to their album I will be amazed if they don't have at least 5 top twenties. I like them, their songs are very diverse in style. Some people have claimed they are Linkin Park with a female vocalist - you can get that impression from Bring Me To Life, but some of their work is completely different to anything I've heard by Linkin Park.

Im sorry, I 100% disagree there.
Fair enough, there are some good bands that are in the mainstream. They might write a few good catchy songs, and Im not saying that they are shit or anything because they are in madia spotlight, but I dont like them. Even if they were "underground" I still wouldnt like them. Their style is copied and played out.
Like Digga said, linkin park with a female singer.
It's like the record companies just realised that there are alot of people who aren't dedicated enough to look for new bands out there and are loving up the metal at the moment, so they pick a band that is of similar style to the biggest culprits (linkin park, puddle of mud(are they still cool? I forget) chad kroger (sp), limp bizkit) and big them up on all the TV stations and radios as being the newest band since [enter last fad] but with a twist (femal singer).
and sorry, but you saying that anything thats not being played on the radios and TV's "sucks", well thats just plain ignorant.
please see that some people make music for musics sake. because they love it, because it means lot to them, because they don't hop from one OMG GRETEST BAND INT EH WORLD EVA! to the next.
obviously, most people who make music will like to get paid to do something they love and get recognised, thats to be expected.
but as soon as they consciously sign a contract to a record company that cares more about money and record sales than the music itself, then I really don't want to hear it.
It feels like its then forced apon you, trying to get your attention using media as a tool (the biggest tool in the world dont forget. used for propaganda and for profit) for personal gain.
I leave with some kool keith lyrics
How you gonna tell me what to wear? !
I don’t need mascara and a stylist
Save that for a big rock group like pantera
Experience, next plateau, mercury, wild pitch, emi, capitol, dreamworks
Never got dropped
Put my lyrics away and stopped
Too many people with hands in my projects
Havin fantasies of me bein superman you bein stupid man
I’m like prince, you might see me once every five years
At the record company
While most of y’all live at the label
Beggin for your rent and car notes to be paid
Under the table, doin routine dances for advances
(ooh, you get involved!)

This is what I call a classic allergic reaction. Someone insulted something that you like, so you reacted like a rash with total disregard for the body.
I don't really know anything about Eva-thingy band (even how to spell the name, nor do I care.) All bands are in it for money and fame, but different bands are in it for different levels, each has a target audience that their lyrics are aimed at. Most pop sensations (ie: Britany Spears, Hanson, Aqua, etc.) have very simple love-based lyrics because they're aimed at skimpy 13 year old girls who have no individuality and enjoy 'going with the flow' of the media.
However other bands have a little individuality, as they play for both money and for the music. Tool for example released a record (Aenima) with the pure intent of p*ssing off the record companies and p*ssing on little whiners that b*tch about bands 'selling out.' I quote: "I sold my soul to make a record, dipsh*t, and you bought one." They don't give a flying f*ck about anyone except themselves and they're making a fortune off it, rather than bands like evathingo that make stupid 'hit' PG-13 songs that the media finds acceptable to boast as 'the #1 hit' simply because it doesn't have the most remote hint of intelligence in the lyrics, it all 'fits in' with the media's idea of a perfect world and perfect propaganda.
Edit: Out of interest, both Tool and APC albums have been sell outs at some point in their times. So unless people are buying the albums to be screamed at, they must love the lyrics and the devotion that these artists have placed into each and every song they've made, regardless of whether the media recognises them or not. (Frankly, these bands would LOSE fans if they made it to the top 30 on MTV. I mean come on, what kind of achievement is that?)

I'm sure they really care about having 10 true fans when they could have 10 million by signing a contract, not to mention get paid the big bucks!
Im not talking about bands, Im talking about individuals and groups.
I am sure that they wouldnt sell out in a second, the people I am thinking of have had many chances, and are recognised by people they want to be recognised by.
do you remember Kurt Cobain?
He didnt want to be famous, he didnt want to be in the media spotlight, he didnt want the people he loathed to be representing his music by wearing their bootlegged t-shirts and going to see him live.
Yes, the world does suck at the moment, money is controling every aspect of life. But it shouldn't control music. If you think otherwise, then my respect for you is going downhill at an alarming rate. sorry.
Im sure the true fans are more than 10 strong.

I'm not asking you to change your beliefs or anything. The idea of an argument is to understand the othersides viewpoint. It's hard to understand when the opposition can't string together a coherent sentence (that wasn't aimed at anyone in particular) or if they don't justify their accusations/beliefs.

try putting "I think" at the beginning, it would seem more like an opinion then.
you say that people who are in it for the music cant make it "big" as if they are less deserving, less talented and just poorer muscians.
maybe they don't want to make it "big", maybe they are happy selling thousands of records without the help of TV ads and pushy record labels.
they are "big" in the circles they move in and with the people they want to be "big" with.

There's really no maybe about it.
That statement she made was a fact in her opinion. ie: fact for her, fiction for all else. Everyone has these.
Fact for me: Tool are better than top 30 shit. This is fact for me because i believe it and no one can deny it to me. Fiction for others that enjoy top 30 because they haven't heard tool enough to understand my obvious right-ness.
I went off track. Point is, it's not false to her, but is to us.

Woo! Another music thread for me to piss all over.
Pinkerbell. You are talking absolute shit. Stop.
BIG <> GOOD.
How many of y'all live in England? You remember that Fast Food song shit? 'A pizza hut, a pizza hut, kentucky fried chicken and a pizza hut'. They didn't write it, even the tune (and they prolly didn't sing it either) and it was huge. Sold shitloads.
Evanescence are obviously just another 'Wow! We managed to get little pop kiddies to listen to rock! let's milk it for all we can!' band. Whether you like them or not or whether they're good or not, that is the solid truth. Otherwise they wouldn't be big, would they?
Basically people who listen to all that top 40 shit are fools. Listen to Eminem? Fool. There's alot of much better rap that isn't in the top 40.
Same with Evanescence. Like em'? Think you're a 'rock chick' wearing your freaking stripey tie or whatever? Fool. Go listen to some REAL rock.
My two pence. Flame away.
