View Full Version : I'm looking for a graphically intense strategy game.

Throw them at me. I could read reviews, but I want opinions and idea's.
I'm after a game like simcity/aoe, preferably leaning more toward the aoe side. Something that has a lot of graphically intense building options. aoe2 featured a lot of buildings/research/units, and was exciting, but it still wasn't enough, and wasnt graphically intense enough for me.
Warcraft 3 is a joke, all the effort went into the 3d engine and it looks like a small lego land to me, too small and uninteresting.
I'm after something large-scale. Commanding Lotr2 size armies against each other. no population limits, not pinsy little 15 man armies. And something that has up to date graphics and lots of building/research/unit options.
Does such a game exist? Any suggestions?

emperor was quite satisfying to complete:)

um, Dune isn't really the graphically intense game I'm looking for. I had a look at all three, emperor looks alright, but it's not really what I'm after. By graphically intense, I mean something that will make my system cringe. Something along the graphical level of UT2k3 or the Upcoming Doom3. realistic is important.
That's the thing though, the only graphic intense games I've found have been space sims or shoot em ups.

You're definitely wanting either Medieval or Shogun total war. Most of the game takes place on a risk style map. That's where you build units (of 60 men each) and buildingsa etc. Then when you go into battle, if you cammand it yourself, then you command armies of up to 12 units (max 1400 or so men on the field at once) with amazing strategic realism. Eg, Entrenched spearmen form a barrier that cavalry can't cross. Wedge formations at a charge go straight through enemy units. High ground is essential. Archers can run out of ammo and units get tired, and morale is very important. And shogun has ninjas and samurai. so it must be cool, QED.

Shogun looks like it might be alright, I'll have to try it.
From the looks of things there's no building side to it? I'm not just after the battles, I'm after something that two people building an empire from scratch and then pit against each other in battles of that level.
also back to regards to graphics. I'm after something at this level:
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2002/pc/act/ut2003/ut_screen007.jpg
as opposed to this
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/screenshots/gs/strategy/shogun/shogun_screen010.jpg
The ground and atmosphere in that just doesn't reflect realism, which spoils the game for me.

THere is building. In the risk style map you have to build castles and dojos and stuff. No multiplayer though.

Cossacks, maybe not fantastically graphically intense but up to 8000 units on the field at once, IIRC.

Get Homworld 2. It is a thing of beauty, and an amazing game.
erm, basing games purely on graphical content, ESPECIALLY strategy ones, its so damn farcical :/
whats the desire?

The 'desire' is to make my computer system struggle with up to date graphics on a game that isn't based only on running around killing as many things as you can.

I would say "Halo: Combat Evolved" if you have an xbox. The plot is awesome, the graphics are unusually detailed, and killing things with M-1 rocket launchers and assault rifles really is awesome. Can you tell I like Halo?

Halos out on PC soon/now
and strat games never have amasing grafix... UT style grafix would grind most/all computer to a halt with a few thousand peeps on the screen...
Command & Conquer: Generals
Lots of strategy, some research and some good graphics. Not sure if its something you're looking for ReAction, but its a good strat game

I Back homeWorld 2 *nods*
The level of details just plain insane, think of Freespace 2's finer elements and stick em in a space strat game
5 cpu's Large map, High unit Cap
Give it an hour or two and see how your comp holds up (assuming everybodies not dead)

C&C:Generals with everything crunked up would suit me fine graphics wise.

go worms wooooooooo!!!
i got the worms battle pack for £15
it had worms 2, worms armageddon and WWP
GorillaBearBear
23-10-2003, 02:23 PM
Why would you want to buy 3 worms games for £15 when you could just buy 1 of them for about £5. They're all exactly the same so you get as much fun with 1 as you do with 3: Very little.
And Worms is not a stratagy game.
I've heard that the computer the players play against on Time Commanders is actually a PC game. I'm not too sure about which one it is though, and it has got fairly good graphics.
Time Commanders is PLAYED ON the Rome :Total War engine. They play against a employee who controls the enemy army, thought he does not play to his full potential i've been told (this is all from the pony tailed technition on the show..yes, thats NOT a girl :D)
So Rome:TW, and Warrior kings are two "stratergys" that will REALLY push your pc. Rome:TW is not out yet however, warrior kings is

you could try Age of Mythology, not exactly fantastic but not bad in terms of graphics, good quality gaming though, very similar to aoe...

i say Total War. Or wait for Rome.
If you have a high spec PC just crank up the unit size and effects n stuff and go for a 8 faction custom battle, i tried it once but my comp aint good enough and i had to pause it to issue any commands :( I have some gr8 pics of it but i cant be bothered to host em anywhere.
Did you see Time Commanders the other night? my namesake was commanding the Egyptians :rawk:

try black and white, with all the settings up it'll put pressure on the best computers

From what I've seen, black and white is not the level of graphical intensity I'm after.
I might get Age of Mythology and give that a shot.

Don't-buy-Black-and-White. It's utter Shite.
If you buy it, you will be fed up near the 2nd to 3rd level. Just wait till BAW2 comes out- much more strategy to do and looks more fun (you can kick armies with your creature! See them fly like donkey balls!)
I doubt that SC would be classed as strategy- more like a brawl fest.
Same with and WC games.
Diablo isn't really Strategy. It gets boring after a while- unless you are a HUGE fan of the game.
I'd say that you should give Empire Earth a try. Some people like it, some don't. Probably because it's kind of like a rock, paper, scissors game. One good thing is that you can tweak the graphics on it.
Try Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun. It's nothing short of a good game, but I still was not really awestruck by it. It was abit short of what I thought it would be.
I can't really say anythin else about Strategy. Shop around- some low games that you have never heard about may be your best game ever.

Medieval: total war is the best strategy game ive played on, i would not suggest getting age of mythology because it is just a matter of collecting gold wood and food and building troops and the battles arn't tatical at all they just all pile in where as in medieval total war you can to taticals things like flank, rout (run away) then turn around and hit the enemy when their disorganized.
Worms 3d is pretty good i have the demo but you need an up to date graphics card for it

Diablo and CC:Tib Sun may be good and fun, but they certainly ain't graphically intense.
i hear rise of nations is better than empire earth

NONONONO!!!
Do NOT buy rise of nations if you have played on age of empires, its the same game with different skins on the units and you can have air units thats all thats new.
its not the same as AOE..... and by that deffinition Empire Earth is the same as AOE

wc3 is great stratergy game is has good graphics also.
I have both Rise Of Nations and Empire Earth. Rise of Nations is way much better, it has more research possibilities and different units for each nation. Although the map size can be a bit small, even on the highest setting.

Age of Empires AOK is the bestestest even better than age of mythology cos the battles are more strategy. However if Time Commanders is anything to go by Total War should be great.

HOLY FUCK! THAT IS AN IN GAME PIC OF TOTAL WAR?!? DAMN!
Seriously! Is THAT how many troops can be on the screen per time?!?! My god, that is most definately the best War game out. It's perfect. Like Cossacks. So many units, so much DESTRUCTION:twisted:.

If you like time commanders and have the medival total war you gotta try it's predecessor, shogun total war, it's a great game also, I also have the add-on pack, the mongol invasion.

a) its not that exciting.
b) cossacks is bollocks and the total war games are nothing like that unhistorical pieces of disorganisation
